Magnitude 8.0 earthquake strikes off Chile, near Iquique: USGS
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A major earthquake of magnitude 8.0 struck off the coast of Chile on Tuesday, near the mining area of Iquique, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
It said the quake was very shallow, only 6.2 miles below the seabed, which would have made it feel stronger. It was centered 53 miles northwest of Iquique.
It was not immediately known if the quake sparked a tsunami alert, but quakes of that size in the water near the coast usually do.

(19,926 posts)Well if there weren't so many other islands claiming to be Hawaii it would be easier. Or maybe if it weren't Rick Sanchez. That would make it so much easier.

(9,740 posts)If there is no large tsunami, then no need to break away, satellite time to Chile and Hawaii is expensive and it would also take time to set up live shots. They are waiting for updates from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

(112,417 posts)SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) A powerful magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off northern Chile on Tuesday night, setting off a small tsunami that forced evacuations along the country's entire Pacific coast. Five people were crushed to death or suffered fatal heart attacks, the interior minister said, but Chile apparently escaped major damage or serious casualties.
The shaking loosed landslides that blocked roads, power failed for thousands, an airport was damaged and several businesses caught fire. About 300 inmates escaped from a women's prison in the city of Iquique, and Chile's military was sending a planeload of special forces to help police guard against looting.
In the city of Arica, 86 miles (139 kilometers) from the quake's epicenter, hospitals were treating minor injuries, and some homes made of adobe were destroyed and 90 percent of customers were without power, authorities said.
The quake also shook modern buildings in nearby Peru and in Bolivia's high altitude capital of La Paz.

(2,388 posts)with many communications and electrical lines down, so they couldn't really report on visual damage
until Wednesday morning. I'm really concerned for U.S. West Coast as well as it seems there is definitely some build up
happening. If you live on the west coast maybe this month would be a good time to take that vacation....

(160,617 posts)'Throat of Fire' volcano erupts in Ecuador
Posted: 2:58 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014
A massive volcano in Ecuador erupted Friday, shooting a cloud of ash several miles into the air.
The volcano is 90 miles south of the capital city of Quito. The BBC reports the eruption produced all the ash in just five minutes. The volcano, known as the "Throat of Fire," has erupted on and off for the past 15 years.
But the volcano has been noticeably more active in the past two months including a major eruption in February. The eruption sent ash at least 6 miles high, but it wasn't the only one on Friday. (Via YouTube / TheWorldNewsTube1)
The Daily Mirror notes another explosion Friday lasted four minutes, followed by five smaller tremors.
The eruption comes just days after a massive earthquake and several aftershocks hit the coast of Chile. It's not clear whether the seismic activity had anything to do with Friday's eruption. (Via ABC)
