U.S. to Send Two Warships to Japan to Counter North Korea

Source: NBC News

TOKYO - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel delivered a two-pronged warning to Asia Pacific nations Sunday, announcing that the U.S. will send two additional ballistic missile destroyers to Japan to counter the North Korean threat, and saying China must better respect its neighbors.

In unusually forceful remarks about China, Hagel drew a direct line between Russia's takeover of Ukraine's Crimea region and the ongoing territorial disputes between China, Japan and others over remote islands in the East China Sea.

"I think we're seeing some clear evidence of a lack of respect and intimidation and coercion in Europe today with what the Russians have done with Ukraine," Hagel told reporters after a meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera. "We must be very careful and we must be very clear, all nations of the world, that in the 21st century this will not stand, you cannot go around the world and redefine boundaries and violate territorial integrity and sovereignty of nations by force, coercion and intimidation whether it's in small islands in the Pacific or large nations in Europe."

Hagel, who will travel to China later this week, called the Asian nation a "great power," and added, "with this power comes new and wider responsibilities as to how you use that power, how you employ that military power."

Obama has not invaded any country in his over five years in office.

In my opinion, the country has learned its lesson concerning invading other countries. I think that it is unlikely that we will pull another Iraq so long as we continue to elect Dems to the Presidency.

At this point, claiming that the Obama administration cannot condemn invasions because of what other administration did, particularly the G.W.Bush administration, does not make a strong point. It just makes you look like you hate the President.

in Japan (plus Japan has its own). And it's really more for China than NK, I would guess--it's not an immediate deployment, it's more of gradual, continued building-up of our presence.

about aggressive moves from an unstable and unpredictable country like North Korea? Do you think if the US navy wasn't there, do you think that batshit crazy basket of crap would hesitate to invade the south? And if the US navy wasn't there, do you think South Korea would have a chance to resist them?

The basis of our military alliances is their willingness to forego nuclear weapons in exchange for protection from us.

defense. Why should we subsidize them or any country? Let them pay for their own for a change. They don't and won't because we US tax payers foot the military bill for them ...and our politicians like to play the imperialist world police power game while everyone here slides down the hole to serfdom to the corporations that have usurped our democracy for their greed and war blood lust. Fuck them all.

We never do anything when this unstable unpredictable country shoots its wad, or invades another country, or kill a few mothers and their babies with Hellfire missiles, now do we? And where in the Constitution does it say we're supposed to go out and threaten unstable, unpredictable countries with our Navy? Fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here?

George, is that you???
