The Georgia-EU association agreement has been scheduled for signing on June 27, European Council President Herman van Rompuy said. He said at a joint press conference with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili in Tbilisi on Wednesday that the association agreement with Georgia would be signed in Brussels on June 27 in the presence of all chiefs of EU member states.

Van Rompuy described the upcoming ceremony as a highly significant historic stage. The choice of this path by Georgia demonstrated its wish for strong state institutions and its readiness to respect the supremacy of law and human rights, he said.

The European Council President said the EU had paid attention to the recent adoption of an anti-discrimination law in Georgia, which proclaimed rights of each citizen irrespective of race, sexual orientation and other factors.

As to how effective the EU was in its policy on Russia, which had breached the territorial integrity of Georgia and Ukraine, the European Union President said the policy had been successful. He said they needed to establish a good relationship with Russia but the latest events in Ukraine created a problem and the violation of territorial integrity was illegal. Yet he said the EU had been conducting an efficient policy, which was proven by the upcoming signing of association agreements with Georgia and Moldova in spite of external pressure.
