DETROIT (AP) General Motors has added yet another recall to its growing list for the year.
The recall of 218,000 Chevrolet Aveo subcompact cars is the company's 30th this year, bringing the total number of recalled GM vehicles in the U.S. to around 13.8 million. That breaks GM's previous annual record of 10.75 million set in calendar year 2004.
The new recall, posted Wednesday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, covers Aveos from the 2004 through 2008 model years. The daytime running light module in the dashboard center stack can overheat, melt and catch fire. GM is aware of an unspecified number of fires due to the problem, but spokesman Alan Adler says it does not know of any injuries or deaths.
GM says it is still developing a plan to fix the problem and will provide details as soon as possible.

(14,449 posts)Can this company have any more bad news. I find it suspect that it is happening now after they just were getting back on their feet after the government bailout. Something stinks.....

(2,479 posts)To go get my ignition switch fixed on my 2005 Cobalt. It works fine, I've removed all my keys, and my chain wasn't heavy anyway. I figure the people that had it, probably had one of those key chains they had clipped everything but the kitchen sink on, plus they had a really rough road to go down, and maybe a flawed part as well. I never had a problem with it.
My car also had the electric steering motor problem--probably went that direction to get rid of leaky hydraulic steering pumps, plus heading to electric vehicles. It was the first year they'd used them I believe, so I could give them that one. I actually had mine replaced BEFORE they recalled it, by calling the Chevey home office, and making a deal where they called it part of the Power Train, which had a 5 year warranty. It went out around 40,000 miles, and I could definitely see it being a problem for weaker people. I'm six feet and above 300 pounds, and when it went out it was like driving a tank.
They did several other things, replaced both front headlights, and sealed up a leak inside passenger in the AC unit, where it was dripping water, under warranty.
I'm not so unsatisfied as some, but nobody died, so...that is a big deal. I'm glad they're making the recalls though, instead of waiting for the PR nightmare they've got on the switch. A lot of companies never recall things until it looks like they'll pay more out, than they'd spend repairing the problem.
