Gov. Cuomo selects former Buffalo-area Rep. Kathy Hochul as running mate

After weeks of speculation, Gov. Cuomo announced via video at the state Democratic convnetion on Long Island that he has tapped former Rep. Kathy Hochul to be his running mate this year to replace Robert Duffy, who is not seeking a second term.

Being a woman helps with progressives, which has an uneasy relationship with Cuomo. And Cuomo has worked hard to gain support in western New York. Being a woman from Buffalo also givfes the ticket gender andController Thomnas DiNapoli and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman are all white males who hail from downstate.
Hochul, 55 and a government relations specialist with M&T Bank, in the video said she looks forward to serving with Cuomo.

Hochul was elected to Congress in 2011 in a special election--the first Democrat to win the seat in four decades. She lost her reelection bid to Republican Chris Collins in 2012 following a redrawing of the legislative lines. Before serving in Congress, Hochul was the Erie County clerk from 2007 to 2011.
