Phil Robertson: GOP needs to ‘get Godly’

Source: Washington Post

Speaking to the Republican Leadership Conference here, the bearded Louisianan said the party and the country have moved too far away from the founding fathers' vision of religion's role in American government -- and that the current version of the separation of church and state is a "lie."

"GOP, you can’t be right for America if you’re wrong with God," Robertson said. “You want to turn the Republican Party around? Get Godly.”

Later in his speechifying, he actually made sense

“I guess the GOP may be more desperate than I thought to call somebody like me," he said.

our government. I've always thought that if the founding fathers had wanted religion to play a role in government they would have written something into the Constitution that at least hinted at that, but I can't find it anywhere.

the GOP reelects adulterers like Vitter and Sanford while holding up multiple-marriage practitioners like Gingrich and Limbaugh as leading voices on the moral superiority of the GOP.

I guess when you're wallowing that deep in hypocrisy it becomes impossible to recognize what a joke your party has become.

Seriously, though, this is a worry. Megachurches can get out the vote, and control local elections. The rest of us have to work even harder.

Their culture, their contemporary outlook fit 240 years ago. Unless that world is where Robertson really wants to live (dying from a toothache at 35, no lights after sunset, sewage in the streets, even muzzle loading rifles) then we need to label these people as what they are, holding us back from moving into the .... I wanted to say "future" but really they don't even want us to move into the "present."

And here's a sample of what he had to say about religion:

Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because if there be one he must approve of the homage of reason more than that of blindfolded fear.

But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.

I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent.

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and State.

History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.

And, quite simply:

Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.
