GOP Moderates Revolt In Kansas (100 Republican Leaders Endorse Democrats)

Source: Politico.com 7/16/14 9:09 AM EDT

A moderate GOP uprising is in full swing against Gov. Sam Brownback, the fierce fiscal and social conservative whose policies led to a purge of middle-of-the-road Republicans from the Legislature early in his tenure.

In a rare and surprising act of political defiance on Tuesday, more than 100 Republicans, including current and former officeholders, endorsed Brownback’s opponent, statehouse Democratic leader Paul Davis. Polls show the challenger with a surprisingly strong shot at taking out Brownback in November

In the Jayhawk state, Davis is presenting himself as part of a proud tradition of centrists from both parties. Davis says Brownback’s hard-right agenda has damaged the state economy and undermined the spirit of compromise that had long prevailed in the state capitol. Brownback is casting Davis as an Obama supporter who’s too liberal for a reddening state. Moderate Republicans could tip the balance.

Sam Brownback has not only not been able to work with Democrats, he hasn’t been able to work with a lot of the people in his own party,” Davis said in a recent interview during a campaign stop at a technical college in Wichita. “He essentially declared war with moderate Republicans during the last state Senate election. Many moderate Republicans saw that, and they are coming to support my campaign.”

Ike, Nancy Landon Kassebaum and few others. The extremists in Kansas kicked out all the moderates and now hopefully they will pay the price.

It won't matter if Davis wins because the Tea Party legislature will pass whatever they want and will override his vetoes. He will truly be a figurehead.

I can't believe some of the idiotic stuff that Nixon has had to veto.

It's just bazaar.

The Mississippi primary had a moderate (for Mississippi anyway) Republican asking Democrats for their votes (gasp!). The Tea Party is even too crazy for Mississippi! If the Tea People get all pissed off at the moderate Republicans, they might just sit home on election day. There could be some surprises in store in the midterm election, even in the South.

Brownback supported many newcomer tea party types running against incumbent moderate Republicans, and now remaining moderate Republicans are retaliating. They know they are next and have found a brilliant way to knock Brownback out. And better still, they are not even trying to hide it!
