MA mayor: City to donate $5 for every angry, anti-LGBT caller Glenn Beck sends after us

Source: Raw Story

The mayor of the city of Salem, Massachusetts doesn’t regret her city’s decision to sever its ties to Gordon College, the Christian university that asked the federal government to grant it a religious exemption from workplace protections for LGBT employees.

In fact, in a letter she posted to the city’s Facebook page, Mayor Kimberly Driscoll pledged to donate five dollars to an LGBT youth charity for every angry phone call her office gets from conservatives bent on harassing city employees over the decision.

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s historic decision in the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby case, Gordon College President D. Michael Lindsay joined a group of other Christian leaders who sent a letter to President Barack Obama insisting that their “sincerely held religious beliefs” compel them to demand exemption from federal nondiscrimination laws.

Gordon College, Lindsay argued, is “an explicitly Christian institution,” and as such, should be allowed to fire or to refuse to hire individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Speaking as one, I say Christians are out of control. The far right is sick and not 'christian' to my way of thinking. Some are trying.

I live in southern CA so the children caught in the immigration crisis are on my mind. Jesus said to the disciples, "do not send them away, you feed them".

Nothing about LGBT, ha ha.

Gordon and their friends are living with blinders. Faith has to expand, not contract. OK. I'm done!

asking for an exemption to the law so that they were free to fire HETEROSEXUAL employees (tit for tat Christians!). Would there be any outrage? You bet - led by Sean Hannity and Megyn Kelly.

then they would extend love and forgiveness to every human no matter the person's situation. At least that is what I remember being taught.

Maybe they are a business that just pretends to be Christian for the bucks.

Anyone who downplays the Hobby Lobby decision is missing the point. The flood of Kristian hate will flow for years.

The freepers and teabaggers are more than capable of bankrupting the East Coast with a pledge like that, but good on her.

I'm fairly sure she will not use city money for this, but will donate from her own funds. She is really that type of a woman. Caring and kind, generous and open.

we see more of this! And if the bigot callers find out about the charity pledge, they'll likely stop calling. After all, they would indirectly be helping a cause they don't want to help.

MAN!
You can't make this stuff up!

It comes full circle!
Salem, Massachusetts. The place that inspired the rule separating church from state.
Where religious nuts executed with reckless abandon on hearsay & hysteria.

The place which made sure that the U.S.A. would not be an OFFICIAL theocracy (we're still working on that unofficial status).
Now it is a place countering the theocrats!

PERFECT story.
Can't get a better headline than this!

Making a mistake in naming Glenn Beck, it only serves to give the appearance that he has more influence than he actually does. He should only be mentioned when necessary and when things are really of his doing. This time he really didn't do anything. From what I can tell, all that happened was his Blaze site reported on the story. Unless i've missed something. Are there quotes from his site showing his activist calls in response to this? Has he made comments on his show?
