Obama unveils programs for young men's initiative

Source: AP-Excite

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is announcing new commitments for his initiative aimed at helping boys and young men of color, called "My Brother's Keeper."

The commitments include an effort by the NBA to recruit 25,000 new mentors and work with at-risk students to increase attendance and performance. AT&T is also announcing an $18 million commitment to support mentoring and other education programs.

The Emerson Collective is committing $50 million to collaborate with school districts and educators to launch a competition to find and develop the best designs for next generation high schools. The Emerson Collective was founded by Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of the late Apple founder Steve Jobs, along with partners from Silicon Valley.

Obama will announce the commitments Monday during a town hall at an education center in Washington.

This is aimed to keep your men in the work force. What about young women?

Most people are hired by their network of friends. In collage they tell you to network with your fellow students for that is where you are more likely to find employment opportunity after graduation. The Department of Labor has determined 92% of all people get hired through friends and relatives.

Now, that does NOT mean you are hired by relatives or friends. 90% of all employers say they only use merit when deciding who to hire, i.e. that you are a friend of someone, or a relative of someone is NOT a factor in being hired. On the surface this sounds like the Department of Labor Studies are wrong, the problem is these are two DIFFERENT surveys or two DIFFERENT things. Employers use merit decision on who to hire, but are limited by the people who apply. Relatives and Friends tell you their employers are looking for someone with your qualifications. Thus you learn who is hiring through friends and relatives and apply for the job. The Employer then look at the applicants and use merit to decide who to hire. The problem is almost everyone who is being considered learned of the job opening by friends and relatives.

I bring this up, for that is one of the reasons women earn less then men, men are given opportunities like this to expand the pool of people they know, and with that larger pool of friends learn who is hiring for more money. Women thus loss out in finding out who is hiring, do to NOT having expanded their friends by NOT being part of programs like this one.

Sorry, women are at "Less Risk" not only for criminal activities but also being hired and the later factor is one of the factor women earn less then men.

I don't think it's an either/or proposition. I think this program will help a lot of people who are in desperate need of mentors, and educate many who will benefit from mentorship. That process should also sensitize them to the many problems facing women, too. Dignity and respect for all.
