Thousands Expected to Cross Verrazano Bridge to Protest Chokehold Death of Eric Garner

Thousands are expected to cross the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in cars and buses Saturday to protest the death of a Staten Island father who died in police custody last month after being put in a chokehold.

Former Gov. David Paterson and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito are among those expected to join the Rev. Al Sharpton's "March for Justice" from Brooklyn to Tompkinsville in Staten Island, where 43-year-old Eric Garner died July 17 while under arrest for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes.

The caravan will then drive from Tompkinsville to the office of Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan, who announced this week his office would convene a grand jury to consider charges in Garner's death.

Donovan said his office made the decision after its review of findings from the medical examiner, who determined he died of neck compression from a chokehold and labeled his death a homicide. Garner's acute and chronic bronchial asthma, obesity and hypertensive cardiovascular disease were contributing factors, the medical examiner determined Donovan declined to say what charges the grand jury may consider, or against whom they might file potential charges.

Garner was killed for selling "looseys" (single cigarettes), as the Rev. Al has reiterated. Meanwhile here in PA, an affluent drug cartel reigned supreme on the Main Line.



Ironically for that case, you get the following statement -

“Some of these defendants chose this path in dealing drugs because they found that that avenue was a way for them to become someone in the eyes of their friends. Unfortunately, everyone got a very hard lesson that it was not and because of their choices are sitting before a judge waiting to be sentenced,” county Special Assistant District Attorney Tonya Lupinacci summed up Wednesday’s events. “It is my hope that this case sends a very strong message to all kids, young adults, families and friends out there that there are consequences to these types of actions.

So for these white "offenders" selling mass quantities of illicit drugs, they get a "few years in prison" and for black "offenders" selling a few individual cigarettes, they receive the death penalty, meted out immediately, right there on the street.

5. No Arrests as Thousands Rally Over Chokehold Death

Thousands of people expressing grief, anger and hope for a better future marched peacefully through Staten Island on Saturday to protest the chokehold death of an unarmed black man by a white police officer.

Police reported no arrests after the afternoon rally and march that drew well over 2,500 people to the streets where Eric Garner was taken to the ground on July 17 by a New York Police Department officer using a prohibited martial arts maneuver.

"This is a Birmingham, Alabama, moment!" the Rev. Herbert Daughtry announced to about 100 demonstrators at a nearby Staten Island church before the march. He asked for anyone who had been harassed, humiliated or disrespected by police to stand. Almost everyone did.

The Rev. Al Sharpton told them to remain nonviolent or go home, a warning he repeated hours later.
