TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) A man set his house on fire and then fatally shot a sheriff's deputy and wounded another Saturday when they responded to the scene, before he was shot to death by other law enforcement officers, authorities said.
Deputies and firefighters responded to the blaze about 10:15 a.m. As the first deputy approached the house, he was fatally shot. The gunman picked up the deputy's gun, walked down the street and used it to shoot a second deputy before he was killed, Lt. James McQuaig of the Leon County Sheriff's Office said.
It wasn't known yet whether anyone was in the home when it was set on fire. Pockets of flames could still be seen in the smoldering wreckage hours after the fire was set.
The gunman was shot to death by a Tallahassee police officer who lived nearby and heard the initial shooting. That officer threw on his bullet-resistant vest a decision that would later save his life and grabbed his gun and ran toward the house, according to a government official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly release the information.

(847 posts)someone killing you? If I was a cop, which I'd never be, I would try to come home to my family each night. And many days, cops don't have any control over the situations that they encounter. There are a lot of crazy and/or desperate people in the world. Remember, cops have to deal with people like the Bundy's.

(15,882 posts)Whining about having to do one's job is not the best way to defend it, I think.
And being that I was a medic, actually working on the streets and with the people of a big city for some time, mostly working nights because the alcoholic haze our prolific gun and knife club culture lives in provided lots of opportunity for human interaction - I actually know quite a lot about facing down some ass clown with a knife or gun. More than once.
In doing so I worked shoulder-to-shoulder with police who had brains, and that was the first thing they pulled, not their weapon. I should point out that all I had were bandages, and there I was across from some drunk with a knife or gun - and I wanted to make it home alive just as bad as the next person, thank you. So being a reactionary dumb ass with a gun is not the only alternative.
"cops have to deal with people like the Bundy's" < At this moment I know exactly how they feel.
Speaking of control, you won't have anything else I want to read.

(2,807 posts)the police knew that he had violent teabagger inclinations. The killer also knew, that they knew he was a possibly violent kook, so after he set his house on fire, he called 911 but used the neighbors address in order to give himself cover, confuse them into thinking it was not a batshit crazy teabagging asshat fox news limbaugh piece of human filth calling.

(6,036 posts)Recall being involved with a similar case years ago. That guy stayed inside the burning house. Was likely dead many hours before the dogs were sent in to find him. While we firefighters luv to run into burning buildings, this was a day we all stayed outside.
