US stocks edge higher in quiet trading

U.S. stocks edged higher early Friday as relatively quiet trading resumed a day after Christmas. The gains followed mixed action in Asian markets. Most European markets were closed.
KEEPING SCORE: The Dow Jones industrial average rose 47 points, or 0.3 percent, to 18,077 as of 9:48 a.m. Eastern time. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained eight points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,089. The Nasdaq composite added 22 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,796.
SECTOR VIEW: All the sectors in the S&P 500 moved higher, led by utilities stocks. The sector is up 27.7 percent this year. Celgene notched the biggest gain among stocks in the S&P 500, adding $2.96, or 2.5 percent, to $112.31. EQT declined the most, shedding 71 cents, or 0.9 percent, to $76.73.
