Prosecutors: Woman Pleads Guilty in 2 Kids' Exorcism Deaths

Source: Associated Press

Jan 16, 2015, 12:34 PM ET

One of two women charged with killing two children while performing what they thought was an exorcism has pleaded guilty in the case, but she won't be serving prison time.

The Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office says 22-year-old Monifa Sanford of Germantown pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder under a plea agreement.

Under the agreement, approved by Montgomery County Judge Cheryl McCally, Sanford was found not criminally responsible and will be committed to a psychiatric hospital.

Prosecutors say Sanford and Zakieya Avery, the mother of the two children killed, told investigators that they believed evil spirits moved successively between the bodies of the children, ages 1 and 2, and that an exorcism was needed to drive the demons out.

I actually agree with this legal outcome. The woman is clearly insane.

I have never seen the Exorcist movie because I think exorcism is beyond idiotic .

And IMO, it was a very well done film for the time - terrific acting in some segments (not all will agree...lol) and quite compelling.

But then, that's the point, isn't it? It was just a MOVIE.

Every character in that film has some troubling issues that come together in a perfect storm of WTF. I think that's why it's so genuinely disturbing, even if you don't buy into the whole exorcism thing.

First saw the film when I was eleven y/o.

Way too young to watch a film like that! Made sure I did not repeat the mistake with my kiddo.

But yeah, I agree with your sentiments entirely.

Eleven years old? All I can say is

I had to wait until I was in college to see it. And even then, I had a hard time with it. It gave me nightmares.

It is not a typical horror movie. It is very well crafted and even subtle in its effect, Surprising, given its subject matter.
