Number of rapes recorded by police in England and Wales leaps 31% in a year

Source: The Guardian

The number of rapes recorded by the police in England and Wales has risen by 31% in the past year to 24,043 – the highest level since for at least 10 years, according to the Office of National Statistics.

The official statisticians say the increase in rapes and a 22% rise in all sexual offences reflects a greater willingness among victims to come forward to report attacks and better recording by the police.

The rise in rape is revealed by the quarterly crime figures published on Thursday, which also show an 11% fall in overall crime levels in the 12 months to September 2014 compared with the previous year, according to the authoritative crime survey of England and Wales. The separate measure of police recorded crime figures show no change in the 12 months to September 2014.

We should be worried about reclassifications of things giving police more powers, even if it's there to help alleged victims, could lead to more miscarriages of justice, look at the abolition of double jeopardy

22% is a huge amount, and the numbers are likely going to rise.... what does this say about England and Wales..?

1. Good to see more people coming forward to report it

Awful that it's even higher numbers that are still not reporting it and that it happens at all.

on informing its populace about rape and its consequences.

Hope the courts will do their bit and send the bastards to do hard time.

3. It always seems to be greater willingness to come forward, not an increase in rapes.

11. Exactly. Increased rape--someone should do something. More reporting--let's all cheer that society

has finally succeeded in empowering more women to come forward.

Let me think, which would the PTB prefer to sell us as an explanation?

Hint: Which costs government nothing at all and makes the PTB look good to boot?

Bored, poor, jobless, hopeless, untreated mental illness.

All crime will rise.

Throw the Tories out.

12. Per capita rape stats provide less provocative numbers

The population of England and Wales is about 56,000,000.

0.003277 (about 3 rapes per 1000 people) in the previous year.
0.004293 (about 4 rapes per 1000 people) in the current cycle.

Compare that to the United States, which is 0.007911 (about 8 rapes per 1000)
