George RR Martin (Game of Thrones author) on "My Position On the Syrian Refugees"

link; excerpt:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Those words, of course, are by Emma Lazarus. Her poem, "The New Colossus," appears in bronze on the base of the Statue of Liberty. A statue given to the United States by France, our nation's oldest friend and ally... a bit of history that seems especially important just now, in light of the recent horrors in Paris....

Emma Lazarus had it right. Donald Trump and thirty-one governors have it wrong, wrong, wrong.

It's perplexed me for years why the GOP hasn't tried to erase that poem. malthaussen Nov 2015 #5

Con extremidades conquistadoras extendiéndose de tierra a tierra;

Beautifully translated. Makes me cry in either language.

Since its sentiments are so obviously un-American.
