Once, while doing research at the JFK Library, just on a whim, I asked to see a copy of the infamous Operation Northwoods memo, the crackpot plan by members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by which "incidents" were to be contrived around the country and then blamed on Fidel Castro, thereby supplying the pretext for another invasion of Cuba. (One of the "incidents" proposed was blowing up John Glenn on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral.) I thought about that day on Friday when information leaked about White House discussions regarding the use of 100,000 National Guard troops around the country as a "deportation force" of the kind the president* discussed during the campaign. Sean Spicer immediately emerged from the dungeon in which he is kept to say that there was "no effort" to use the Guard to round up immigrants, but he did not deny that it was discussed, and that's the important thing ...
... you can trace it back to the fact that the elite political press gave Ronald Reagan an eight-year pass for being utterly truthless, or to the endless pursuit of Bill Clinton during which the sainted Tim Russert put Matt Freaking Drudge on Meet The Press, or that time when Dick Cheney's aide said under oath that MTP was the best platform available to launch bullshit into the mainstream. You can find even more examples at the other networks and on the high-end op-ed pages. But the major point is that, over the past 40 years, one of America's two political parties has been steadily losing its mind, in public, and the country and its elite political media chose not to notice, or to minimize the process ...
