Why would Pelosi step down? Parties don’t usually throw out congressional leaders after electoral losses.

By James M. Curry and David Karol June 30 at 6:00 AM

Should Nancy Pelosi step down as House Democratic leader? Some congressional Democrats and political pundits have been calling for that since Jon Ossoff’s narrow defeat in the Georgia special election, coming after several bad electoral cycles for House Democrats. Some claim that congressional leaders typically step aside when their party does poorly in national elections.

But that’s not so.

Even repeated electoral defeats do not drive party leaders to step down.

To check, we looked at patterns of leadership change in Congress since the early 20th century. Party leaders typically do not step down after poor electoral showings. Of course, some have. For instance, former speaker Dennis Hastert resigned when Republicans lost control of the House in 2006. And after Democrats lost their Senate majority in 2014, Harry Reid decided to step away. Poor election results contributed to the end of Newt Gingrich’s, Charles Halleck’s, and Joe Martin’s tenures as GOP House leader in 1998, 1965, and 1959, respectively.

Or just those who care about who leads our party. It doesn't seem likely that everyone posting on this thread read it, and of course not most others.

This is some basic stuff, but most of us haven't studied political science and gaining just this amount of perspective would literally help make those who care happier.

Not understanding makes people unhappy, so many get upset and rant. Just look at all the imaginary demons those on the right are constantly upset about.

Folks paying attention know that she's been holding the caucus together really well, provided unified resistance to the Trump agenda.

Zero interest in getting rid of fighters like Pelosi just because Republicans hate her. yMmv

Not saying she hasn't done a good job just that the Republicans have demonized her until now they hear her name

and inevitably whoever would replace her, doesn't matter squat. This is a party matter and they're not Democrats, so they're IRRELEVANT.

If you want to look for hostiles who do matter, look inside the party. Don't imagine a minority group there can be padded by piling in a bunch of trumpsters, though. It doesn't work that way.

Can't you say the word liberal, you put it in parenthesis?

I have many problems with Pelosi. I won't go into it because one can get attacked for a dissenting opinion on her. But I don't mind her being the standard bearer for me... a Liberal. It's what she is. It's what I am.. I get that it's a dirty word to the "so called fly over country" but it shouldn't be here and it isn't for most of my friends and family.

My least concern is for what the wingnuts think of Liberals. Right now, we need to be a united party. At the moment in time, Nancy Pelosi is the minority leader. Anyone who doesn't like it can advocate for her replacement. But right now, she's the boss. Barring something like a plan of hers to expose Mika and Joe or blackmail them or some such..

I'm with Her.

Pelosi and Bernie were both featured in those dark money lie ads. Are we supposed to dump him as well?

Do we passively submit to the GOP darkmoney superpacs and purge all the Dems that scare Republicans?

I do want to note that they'll smear any Dem leader.

If Pelosi's out and that Inexperienced Ohio ConservaDem should some how peter-principle his way into the leadership position, he will get DEMONIZED by the superpacs so fast his head will spin.

And like any successful Dem they've put a target on her and want her gone. Those are reasons to rely behind her, and not give in to the GOP.

Funny how people giving al sorts of advice on how to be a tough negotiatior suddenly want to totally capitulate. And remake the Dem image into what- a bunch of white men who do not represent the base? Fuck that.

in a thoroughly untenable situation.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is NOT a true Democrat, IMO, no matter how they try to justify themselves.

I only wish that she had been MUCH harder on GOPers when she was in a position to play hardball with them.

Christ, at this rate the Democratic leadership will be passing on power to the next generation slower than the Soviet Politburo between the mid-60s and mid-80s. And what do we have to show for it, besides President Donald Trump and complete decimation of the Democratic Party at every other level of government?
