Colorado Democrats overwhelmingly reject Democrats for Education Reform at state assembly
This is how Democrats can earn back the enthusiastic support that previously gave them decades of control in Congress: stop supporting efforts to privatize schools and "prove" they are failing through redundant standardized testing that is then used to punish teachers and close schools. No one has ever proved how the latter helps any student by making them travel farther to an even more crowded classroom.
If Democrats could say no to Wall Street on this one issue, we could see a huge difference.
My wife is a public school teacher, but we put our kid in a private school that we can't afford because of all the destructive dictates that come down from the state because some hedge fund manager spread some cash around and had their astroturf foundations claim it would somehow help.
And they never seem to demand public school educate everyone else's kids the way theirs are in private schools.
This is low hanging fruit if Democrats are willing to grab it.
Colorado has shown you the way.
After booing down the head of the education reform organization, who described herself as a lifelong Democrat, delegates voted overwhelmingly Saturday to call for the organization to no longer use Democrats in its name. While its unclear how that would be enforced, the vote means a rejection of DFER is now part of the Colorado Democratic Party platform.
The one-sided platform fight revealed a growing divide among party activists and establishment politicians on education policy that could have implications for the governors race. Cary Kennedy, a former state treasurer who has the backing of the teachers unions, got 62 percent of the vote at the assembly, easily securing a place on the ballot alongside U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, who got 33 percent of the vote.

The platform amendment reads: We oppose making Colorados public schools private or run by private corporations or becoming segregated again through lobbying and campaigning efforts of the organization called Democrats for Education Reform and demand that they immediately stop using the partys name Democrat in their name.

(1,076 posts)You mentioned low hanging fruit. It might be, but I've been against charter or privatization for some time now.
My reason is economics. Why should the tax/revenue be exported to the one percent or anyone upscale?
School money needs to stay local. Spend it on the teachers.
Trickle down does not work. Teachers spend their money in the area where they live.
Education money must stay down at the grassroots level.

(6,288 posts)Teachers are great at teaching when given an open book of their own knowledge & experiences to teach from along with reasonable sets of guidlines.
Problem is, we have great teachers who can no longer work their own critical thinking ideas into a days's curriculum because they have been bound to teachung to those Star Test rules & pre-planned lessons.
Schools are rated by the Star Test results.
That's the problem.
Pisses me off that Public schools must follow the Star Test lessons to compete for school ratings, yet private charters do not.
They are free to teach the way public ed USED to be taught.
If Star Testing detetmines the rating of Public schools then EVERY school should have to also.
Star Testing is yet another way of dumbing down Public Ed

If you ask the right question, even most conservatives support traditional public schools over hedge fund manager scam schools.

(6,288 posts)Anyone can call themselves a Democrat.
Its been a proven & useful label to attach yourself to when you haven't a chance in hell of getting your name in the news on your own.
Shilling for privatizing schools on behalf of coorporate profits is not a Democratic platform.
Be interesting who the 'Democrats for Education Reform' really are, who funds them & who they are further connected to.
Kudos to the Colorado Democratic Delegates

(25,853 posts)from an excellent public school system (and this was before the bullshit high stakes testing) to an independent secular school mainly because of the older son being bullied.
It turned out to be the best thing we could have done for them, and it was clear to me that public schools need to be vastly better funded, especially as they are mandated to accept all comers and get all of the special needs kids.
I also happily continued to pay school taxes, because I understood how fortunate we were that we had the resources to send our kids to the independent school.

I still think the main problem in our system is MONEY. Citizen United opened a real can of worms and is the real reason we are in such trouble. I

It ties K-12 teaches and even college instructors in knots with their bullshit, and now the idea that "not everyone needs to go to college" is their new thing, which means reducing enrollment even though the kids themselves know that a four or even two year degree is one of the very few ways to escape living in a cardboard box and eating whatever the rich throw over the walls of their gated communities the rest of their lives.

(39,405 posts)is a sign they've realized this is an issue where they have shot themselves in the face.
Or just that they can't win the argument, so they'll stop arguing and just keep doing it.
