BTRTN: A Call to Action from Anita Hill

Anita Hill spoke at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference in Houston this very morning, on this historic day. And my daughter, a computer science professor, was there.

"Too often, members of groups that are underrepresented, marginalized, or silenced feel isolated, or they feel that their voices will not be heard if they speak, or that they will not be believed if they are heard, or that nothing will change even if they are believed. But we need these voices. We need to keep pushing back, even when change doesn't come right away. Judge Kavanaugh said during his opening remarks yesterday, “you may defeat me in the final vote, but you’ll never get me to quit. Never." Let’s turn those words back on him. We may be defeated in the final vote on Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation, but we cannot ever quit.

The theme of this year’s Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing was “We Are Here.” We---the women at this conference---are here..."

Admiral Grace Hopper was a legend. A giant. A soft-spoken woman who never had to raise her voice, as it was never necessary. She gained everyone's respect the old fashioned way: she earned it.

"You don't manage people; you manage things. You lead people." She said.

What we lack right now is a leader behind whom we can unify.

Many candidates, but no takers.

Yet.
