A really well written article about the baseball game last night - ESPN

Bradford Doolittle

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/25102472/mlb-boston-red-sox-rebound-move-one-win-title-game-4-rally

The four-run lead seemed insurmountable. Sure, the Red Sox have baseball's best offense. But that scoring machine had been smoking and choking like an Edsel ever since it arrived in L.A. After 18 innings of a 3-2 loss on Friday and Hill's six scoreless innings Saturday, Boston's batsmen had little to show for their trip west.

Six innings into the game, the traveling horde that accompanies every World Series matchup was pinging travel apps all over Dodger Stadium, vying for whatever flights back to Boston might still be available for Monday.

Anyway, Madson entered the game with an ERA of 0.00 in the series -- the worst 0.00 ERA in the history of the Fall Classic. Pitching in high-leverage spots, Madson had faced nine batters, walked two, given up two hits, uncorked a wild pitch and allowed all five of the runs he had inherited to score.

About this Sale-as-Tony-Robbins business. Maybe there was something to it. Maybe it was a coincidence. Martinez had a feeling the game was going to break anyway, not because of what he saw from his teammates, but because Puig homered. Hey, it's J.D. Martinez. However he sees the world, it's working.

Of course, it is easier to read when you are a Red Sox fan -

Hitters changed their Stances and went after the first pitch, the game changed. The Dodger Catcher could have done a better job of calling Pitches. By the third at bat,Boston had the Dodger Pitcher's number.

Going back ten years or so. My buddy watches a lot of their games and he pointed out that the Sox kill after 5 or so innings. The third look at a pitcher and they figure him out. They adopted Saber metrics which extended games but their third look changed how pitchers are managed these days. That's a big part of why starters only go 5 innings now. At least that's my take on it.

Only knew it as charting. Heard that description now I know what the real program is called..

Noticed a couple Sox players were watching Hill's setups and when they went to the on Deck Circle, they practiced their swings in unison with the Pitches. BTW,when Hill turned his foot running to First, that was the change agent for him.

The Edsel’s problem was that it was really ugly. It did not have quality issues.

That popped me right out of the article.

4. I had to look-up the term, "mise-en-scene"

The game turned to the seventh and a lanky Floridian who is one of only two Boston players who haven't seen a second of live action since the Red Sox arrived at Dodger Stadium threw a fit. It became a thing. The television cameras caught it, replayed it, slowed it down. And why not? It made for some choice mise-en-scene.

I do like learning new vocabulary. I'm already mapping out a plan to drop mise-en-scene during a faculty meeting.

mise en scène
/ˌmēz ˌän ˈsen/
noun
noun: mise en scène; plural noun: mises en scène

the arrangement of scenery and stage properties in a play.
the setting or surroundings of an event or action.

Great game for Boston fans. I didn't like the "Edsel" simile, for a few reasons, one of which is recounted above. The other is that I'm not sure how many fans under a certain age (I'm above a certain age) will get the simile.

that Trump wasn't managing them. It would have been the most incredible World Series in history and they would have wiped out the Red Sox.
