Democratic Voters Want Impeachment
Theres been a shift, said Madeleine Dean, a freshman Democrat from Pennsylvania who also sits on the Judiciary Committee, and also wants to begin an impeachment inquiry. At a town hall last week, one of the first questions she was asked was about impeachment. When she visited local stores and barbershops, she told me, constituents approached her and said, of Trump, You cannot let the behavior stand.
On Friday, Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat who is the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told MSNBCs Chris Hayes that hed come around to supporting an impeachment inquiry after speaking to people in his district: To the person, everybody said, What are you all going to do about President Trump? Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, told me, I had about a dozen events this weekend, and there was an overwhelming sense that we have been presented with abundant evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors and we need to launch an inquiry.
According to a CNN poll conducted last week, 76 percent of Democrats favor impeachment. (The poll did not ask about simply beginning an impeachment investigation, which is what some House Democrats are calling for.) Impeachment is favored by 41 percent of voters overall, not a majority, but far more than supported impeachment at the beginning of the Watergate hearings.
Its no wonder so many Democrats want their representatives to take a more aggressive approach to the president. It has now been five months since the party took control of the House of Representatives, a month and a half since the redacted report by the special counsel Robert Mueller was released, and almost a week since Mueller stood before the nation and all but asked Congress to hold a lawless president accountable.

(6,560 posts)for their representatives. Last count I read there are 58 representatives in favor of impeachment and that is far short of the 218 needed to pass anything to do with impeachment. Nancy is not going to bring an impeachment inquiry/ process to the House floor without having the votes! If it can't pass in the House why would she?
History will not look good on Dems not voting for impeachment.

(6,560 posts)You do not have to convince me of the need, I think the same thing. 58 Democratic representatives will not pass impeachment proceedings in the House. That is all I am saying.

(51,797 posts)But yes, people should call their reps.
Folks, just call the federal switchboard: 202-224-3121 and ask to speak to your representative.

(6,560 posts)to the 218+ Democrats needed to pass the impeachment inquiry/ process. What is accomplished by bringing something to the floor if it won't be passed? tRump can use that outcome to add fuel to his "no collusion, no obstruction" statements for his campaign. Just for the record, I am NOT against impeachment and would like to see it proceed post haste myself. WE NEED DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVES TO SUPPORT IMPEACHMENT WHEN WE DO IMPEACH.

(36,216 posts)The first will have a not-so-good election outcome. The second will bring a good election outcome that will heap eventual indictment, arrest and court proceedings on Trump.
People who want an impeachment vote can get accountability without removal, or accountability with jail through an impeachment inquiry.
People ought to be clear about what they want. Just saying "impeachment" doesn't do that.
Nancy is trying to get them to think about that.

(51,797 posts)Folks I've heard want televised impeachment investigation hearings. They want a long hot summer for Trump, like Nixon had, that eventually caused Nixon to resign before it even went to the Senate.
