US Postal Service Warning: Calif. Rejected 100,000 Ballots Postmarked Too Late, Va. 5% Too Late

'California rejected 100,000 ballots postmarked too late, and Trump wants it to be worse in November.' Laura Clawson for Daily Kos Labor, Daily Kos Staff, 27, 2020. - Excerpts, Ed.:

The Postal Service is not just responsible for prescriptions and letters from grandparents during a pandemic and basically every damn thing people in rural areas need shipped to them; American democracy itself is at stake. With coronavirus likely to still be a major concern in many states come November—thanks, Trump!—more people than ever will be voting by mail.

But in California, where voting by mail is already an established practice, more than 100,000 ballots in the March primary were rejected because they weren’t postmarked in time. “We are very concerned, and we want the public to be aware,” APWU President Mark Dimondstein warned, pointing to the possibility of bigger problems in November.

In Virginia, as many as 5% of ballots were rejected because they were postmarked too late. The Postal Service needs the resources to process these ballots quickly enough to get them counted, but Trump—who has made his fear and loathing of mail voting more than clear—wants the opposite.

Reports are spreading that Trump’s new postmaster general is issuing direct orders that would slow down the mail, while in at least one state, postal workers say their state postmaster is going even further to create delays. The Republican Party has long wanted to destroy the USPS for multiple reasons...

11. I haven't found anything about that. Will be voting by mail as early as possible.

Have you found out whether it's possible to drop off mail-in ballots in person?

2. Repugs in congress have been slowly debilitating the USPS for the last 10 years.

and it keeps getting worse. They are doing it incrementally and now we are seeing the results. Please write your reps in the house and senate. We have very few good institutions left in this country and the post office was one of them, until now.

3. During Bush2 the USPS was required to pre-fund

retirement programs 75 years into the future, for employees not yet born to hamper operations.

17. I'm

sure they took that money from USPS to fund his war. If Democrats get in senate, presidency and house I want to see them get rid of this scam that they required of the postal service.

9. If you can get to an open post office, you can hand in mail to be postmarked then and there

More expensive would be to buy and print priority postage and label online.

In some places, you can hand in your absentee ballot at the election center.

12. In Oregon postmark is irrelevant.

The ballot must be received before 8:00 pm on Election Day. There are official drop boxes in several spots here in Eugene where you can drive up and deliver, just like drive up mail boxes. Or be sure to mail it several days before Election Day.
