Man charged with hate crime after BLM protest calls for 'healing'
The man charged with a hate crime after a confrontation with Black Lives Matter supporters on Hertel Avenue in August was due in Buffalo City Court for his arraignment Thursday morning.
But Michael Cremen already informed the court earlier this week he wouldn't be showing up.
And Cremen's email sent to the court Tuesday evening, in which he raised objections over wearing face masks, led Erie County District Attorney John Flynn to conclude the Cattaraugus County man may pose a danger to the community.
Flynn disclosed excerpts of the email, which Cremen confirmed to The Buffalo News later Thursday that he sent.
"I will not be compelled by any means to violate my conscience, therefore I will not wear a mask to any court proceeding or attend any court proceeding in which any person involved is wearing a face mask," Cremen wrote, according to Flynn.
The email writer then issued a warning: "If you do issue warrant for my arrest, it is unlawful and please understand that anyone that approaches my person wife or property especially armed wearing a badge and or face mask I consider to be a very dangerous threat to my life," Flynn said reading a portion of the message. "And my lord will severely punish those in violation of his order of protection over my life."
