Former military doctors: Vote Biden, not Trump, for America's health, security and future
Like all physician leaders and graduates of the United States Military Academy (West Point), Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy, I was trained to lead Americas sons and daughters. Today I write on behalf of all of us who feel compelled to step forward in response to the profound crisis that COVID-19 has created.
As physicians, we see extraordinary challenges. We share firsthand the pain of our patients families who mourn avoidable deaths. We treat the acutely ill and the chronic sufferers of COVID-19. We daily face mental health challenges, both our own and those of our patients, made worse by the ongoing assault on health care options for those in the greatest need. Indeed, this population bears the greatest burden of the coronavirus and has the least access to affordable health care in our country.
As leaders from the service academies who have served our country, we see ineffective leadership contrary to our values of integrity, honor and selfless service. We recognize the confusion that results from reliance on partisan opinion above impartial science and on baseless conjecture above the informed experience of health care experts.
Irresponsible leadership has resulted in decreased adherence to clearly beneficial and simple risk mitigation strategies such as masking, distancing and hand washing. The presidents coronavirus infection and hospitalization clearly demonstrate how important these strategies are not only to our health, but also to our national security.
