Trump voters don't really believe Biden stole the election but they do want a coup
"......Many of their long-standing beliefs don't hold up to modern moral standards or rational scrutiny. Rather than give up those beliefs, however, Republicans have developed a series of disingenuous gambits, conspiracy theories and trolling tactics to derail conversations, sow confusion and otherwise distract those who would challenge their indefensible ideology.
Of course, it's morally indefensible to come right out and say you care more about keeping your gas guzzler than protecting the planet. So, instead, conservatives claim to be "skeptical" of climate science, wasting their interlocutor's time by forcing them to prove, over and over and over and over again, that climate change is real. Similarly, open contempt for women's rights is hard to argue, so instead, conservatives will claim concern for "fetal life" to justify support for forced childbirth even though none of their other policy preferences point to concern about the wellbeing of children, much less fetuses....
....Instead, it's important to see those who support Trump's coup for who they are: People who have been radicalized, through racism hateful propaganda and a sense of perpetual grievance, against democracy. They aren't going to change their minds because of new facts, because the underlying belief which is that they deserve to be in power, no matter what is the problem here. It's a rising American authoritarianism, and we underestimate it at our peril."

(17,582 posts)That the Republican voters think that Democrats are so smart as to pull off a massive nation-wide fraud, involving tens of thousands of people, thousands of voting machines, years of planning in absolute secrecy, and in some cases, raising the dead, and yet leave no trace of evidence behind. If I were a Republican, I would be doffing my Trump cap and saying, "Them's some smart sum bitches."

(16,646 posts)Back in the 90's about the time of Newt Gingrich, the GOP tired of being the "loyal minority" and thought they saw an opportunity to move into office and develop a majority. By the time of the Bush and Rove, they thought they had built the "permanent Republican majority". It didn't take long to realize their idea would never come true. However, elements of the GOP figured out that through suppression, gerrymandering, and the distorted Senate representation, they could govern without a majority. They have been since pursuing this course, and in the process establishing the idea in their supporters that they are the ones that should govern. It constantly runs into trouble because of course at local and state levels, it can be hard to maintain a governing position, with minority support. This gives rise to the need for an explanation for their losses at the ballot box. So they resort to explanations which support the assertion that they ARE in the majority. So we have dead people voting, immigrants voting, people voting twice, and people voting in other peoples name.
They are now toying with their ability to establish their power to decide elections in their favor. So you see them exercise various methods to see which ones will be opposed and which ones will be ignored. It's what the court cases are about, it's why they're talking to AG's, Governors, and those charged with running elections to see if and how they can manipulate them to their advantage. They'll probably see what and how they can do in January when it comes time to accept the EC results. And understand, it's not that they want or need to be successful. They need to understand what resistance, from where, and who it will come. It will allow them to plot for the future. ALEC will know what laws to push. GOP legislatures will alter election laws to make it more possible next time around. And they'll prep their base to support whatever it is they'll try to do.

(9,670 posts)To pre-emptively neuter Dems should they choose to investigate the criminal syndicate Trump campaign/GOP collusion with Russia from 2016.
THAT'S where the smoke was arising, NOT what we just experienced in 2020.

(111,312 posts)Admitting to themselves that it's not the case, at all, means questioning a lot of basic assumptions that they never want to question, like televangelists being entertainers and con artists of the type Jesus whipped out of the temple and whether it's really god they've been bargaining with, after all.
A lot of them are going to go even more seriously wacko short term, cognitive dissonance of this magnitude is not something the human psyche handles well, or at all.

(4,390 posts)The prejudice that precedes choice. And if through fear you feel disempowered by science, equality, etc.., then those will be your prejudices. Low empathy, low IQ is a predilection for these types.

(833 posts)It's even scarier than dump. Repugs are far more frightening if you believe in democracy. I've said for quite a while--and I'm not the only one--that repugs believe they have the right to rule, no matter what. This article bears that argument out, and it exposes their insidious motivations and their techniques for achieving and maintaining minority rule. It should be required reading for every Democrat.

(22,756 posts)is spot on... all the Republican politicians (senators, representatives, governors, etc. ) are ultimately responsible for the dismissal of democracy... they had/have the power to quell this madness and do nothing... on some level it feels as if we are at a point of no return concerning the cult like behavior of the followers

(14,175 posts)Goes the same for Obama birtherism, as stated in the article.
Also they are great at pretending they are "concerned" whenever a Democrat, like Franken, is accused of sexual misconduct. Suddenly they are champions of women's rights and safety. OMG Al put his hand on someones butt! Then a couple years later they are fine with calling Trump bragging about physically mauling any woman he wants to because he's a big entertainment star, just locker room talk. (I guess since he filmed his shows in New York, he can't be called "Hollywood" elite?).
But they are very selective in their moral outrages. And seem to blithely not see any contradictions at all.
