The Republican Party As Totalitarian State
Very interesting, thoughtful article.
The answerthe only answeris: Because Donald Trump said so.
What if Trump emerged after the election and said, Tough loss. Joe Biden put up a good fight. Ill be back in 2024 to beat him like a drum. Well, in that situation, there would be no move to overturn the election and no one in the precincts of Conservatism Inc. would be arguing that, ackshually, Donald Trump won by a landslide.
They would not be arguing that because there is no evidence for this argument. None. Absent a command from Trump, no outside observer would have come to this verdict on their own.
But present a command from Trump, this position became mandatory.
This is the definition of autocracy. And once you understand that the GOP itself has become an autocracy, it becomes easy to understand a lot of whats going on.

(9,275 posts)Are there contingency plans in place in case they actually (very unlikely but still) win this? What to do with 80 million extremely angry citizens? Will other countries offer us political asylum? Is there a secret plan to start secession? Never thought wed even have to entertain such things but we must.

I still think he will pull something else. Until Jan. 20, we are not safe.

(2,042 posts)They show that the Democratic Party is NOT a totalitarian state like the Republican Party most definitely is. Our elected Congressmen and Congresswoman are not afraid to disagree and even disrupt. They can speak out without fear of recrimination, except for charges of "Democratic disunity" in the media.
Also why I love Nancy Pelosi for being able to lead our highly diverse, extremely passionate, and strongly opinionated Democratic Representatives.
Damn, it feels good to be Democrat.
