Opinion: The GOP has become the party that stands for nothing

The popular 1990s sitcom "Seinfeld" was often described as a television show "about nothing" -- a characterization that could easily apply to the Republican Party today.

The party of Ronald Reagan -- once a stalwart of fiscal conservatism, free trade and hawkish foreign policy -- is now lost in a wilderness of its own making.

Over the past four years, Republicans who have supported and enabled President Donald Trump have been more interested in retaining their hold on power than standing up for any principles or coherent policies. With no one to stop him, Trump, the only US president who has been impeached twice, has completely remade the GOP in his own disgraceful and pathetic image.

After Trump supporters broke into the US Capitol last week in a desperate attempt to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden's victory, 10 House Republicans, including Rep. Liz Cheney, broke ranks Wednesday to impeach Trump.

They believe in self-aggrandizing and that's about it.

If they have to lie, cheat, steal, and commit sedition to get it, who cares? They deserve it more than anyone else, right?

The entire party platform was, "whatever der fuhrer wants is okay with us." So now that he wants insurrection and an insurgency, that must be what they stand for. If they don't, they'd better say so.

Maybe not "coherent policies," but you're living in a fantasy world if you don't realize that modern-day Republicans stand for white supremacy and "traditional" gender roles...as well as their right to impose such policies regardless of our democratic (small-d) system. In other words, they stand for conservatives having all the power, and those opposing them either "crying uncle," or being destroyed.

They stand for whoever is the cult leader of the Republican base.

If Trump's base still want him the Republican party will slavishly do whatever he orders.
If they dump him, and without any tweets to keep him in front of the news they might, then they Republicans stand for whoever takes Trump's place.

They are only the party of a man, not a party of laws or values.

Using that as their excuse for cutting programs they didn’t WANT to spend money on, while spending freely on the military and tax cuts for the Uber wealthy and corporations.
