Nearly one in five people charged in connection to the violent Jan. 6 raid on the U.S. Capitol has some form of a military history, according to an NPR analysis.
Of the more than 140 individuals charged in the attack thus far, at least 27, or nearly 20 percent, have served or are currently serving in the U.S. military, NPR found.
The numbers are startling as only 7 percent of all American adults are military veterans, according to the Census Bureau.
Among those charged in the riot which resulted in five deaths and forced lawmakers, staffers and journalists to hide in secure locations as the mob ransacked offices, assaulted Capitol Police officers and stole property is Jacob Fracker, an off-duty police officer who is a corporal in the Virginia National Guard and was an infantry rifleman in the Marine Corps. His colleague, Thomas Robertson, 47, and an Army veteran, is also facing charges. ........................................

(658 posts)Please keep in mind that the greatest majority of military positions do not require security clearances greater than secret. I had a secret clearance as a weather forecaster.
Special forces... yes. If the article had said that 20% of the people involved had special forces experience in the military, then I'd be concerned.
The greatest majority of people in the military are basically government employees in uniform. I was. The VERY GREATEST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE THAT I MET in my time in the military were just like me.
Just because some guy that lives 2 doors down from you used to be in the national guard, or the army, doesn't mean that you have Jason Bourne living 2 doors down from you. It means that the guy probably filed paperwork in some administrative function at a base in Boise, Idaho. Of course... if he was a Navy Seal... and he participated in the insurrection... THEN you might want to be worried.
