The Mountain States TRUSTED news source.
The right to vote is fundamental to our American democracy and protecting that right should not be about party or politics. Least of all, protecting this right, which is a value I share, should never be done in a partisan manner.
During my time as West Virginias secretary of state, I was determined to protect this right and ensure our elections are fair, accessible and secure. Not to benefit my party but all the people of West Virginia. For example, as secretary of state I took specific actions to establish early voting for the first time in West Virginia in order to provide expanded options for those whose work or family schedule made it difficult for them to vote on Election Day. Throughout my tenure in politics, I have been guided by this simple philosophy our party labels cant prevent us from doing what is right.
Unfortunately, we now are witnessing that the fundamental right to vote has itself become overtly politicized. Todays debate about how to best protect our right to vote and to hold elections, however, is not about finding common ground, but seeking partisan advantage. Whether it is state laws that seek to needlessly restrict voting or politicians who ignore the need to secure our elections, partisan policymaking wont instill confidence in our democracy it will destroy it.
As such, congressional action on federal voting rights legislation must be the result of both Democrats and Republicans coming together to find a pathway forward or we risk further dividing and destroying the republic we swore to protect and defend as elected officials.
.........................................
I believe that partisan voting legislation will destroy the already weakening binds of our democracy, and for that reason, I will vote against the For the People Act. Furthermore, I will not vote to weaken or eliminate the filibuster. For as long as I have the privilege of being your U.S. senator, I will fight to represent the people of West Virginia, to seek bipartisan compromise no matter how difficult and to develop the political bonds that end divisions and help unite the country we love.

(92,187 posts)The only chance we have is to gain the majority in the House and Senate by at least 2 votes in 2022.
Barring that, the future of democracy in the country looks very bleak

(10,429 posts)Republicons leapt into action to suppress our vote immediately after the last election. Hundreds of laws being passed, and I don't trust the Moscow-Mitch-packed court system to overturn them.
They reacted immediately to Democratic wins to make sure it can't happen again, by next year it will be too late. They will take everything back.

Make sure they have the proper IDs, vote by mail where they can, vote early where they can, have water and food on them if they have stay in long lines etc.

(10,429 posts)No one is advocating for just ceding victory to them. But we also can't just sit back and "elect more Dems next time". They are working ceaselessly to make sure we can't.
This is a call to arms, and we can't just let the status quo voting system be our only means to fight.

(1,979 posts)the other day and he actually referred to the Democratic Party as "the Democrat Party" - my head almost snapped off my neck as I swung to make sure I heard that right. Does anyone really believe this guy is a Democrat?
We should be finding progressive Democrats and getting them in office. I've volunteered for years for local and national issues, phone banking, trained on the voter database, etc. - my phone is NOT ringing asking me for my help or even for my money.
This is the reason why we continue to get the power and we continue to lose the power. We are clearly smart and on the right side of what is truly good and fair in life - why can't we grow some balls and go after the power we need to make the changes that are necessary to save our democracy? I get SO FRUSTRATED with our kum-bi-ya mindset sometimes (and I'm a hippy myself!).
If we do not get stronger, and get the right people in place to get our agenda rolled out, they will surely come in and once again, destroy life as we are rebuilding it.
God I get frustrated sometimes!~!!
