Biden Heads To Europe To Convince Allies The United States Has Their Backs
https://www.npr.org/2021/06/09/1004394359/biden-heads-to-europe-to-convince-allies-the-united-states-has-their-backsBiden has said he knows that he will still need to convince allies that things have changed, that the Trump years were an exception rather than a sign that America had shifted. He told Congress during his joint address that he had heard the concerns from many leaders.
"The comment that I hear most of all from them is they say, 'We see America is back, but for how long?'" he said.

It's nice to have a leader who knows the difference between our friends and our enemies--one who brings a level of respect from other countries.

(42,568 posts)It was horrifying for them (and us) to see how easily our nation's safeguards could be overturned by one authoritarian asshole and one complicit political party. Thank goodness Biden won, but what happens in 2024? (Or August of this year, according to some.) We're not out of the woods yet.

(391 posts)I hope Biden doesn't over-promise. But, if Manchin and the other blackmailees don't vote to keep our democracy, China is going to rule the world anyway.

biden may have a rosy optimism about the future but he doesn't have a crystal ball.
yes, things have changed...for now.
but republicans are still passing insane voter bills in various states
focus should be more home-based imo

(2,065 posts)That it will take a lot of hard work, and lots of time, before things are really back to normal again, and America can really be the responsible world leader it used to be in the world. We need to get our own house in order first. And yeah - the "For how long?" question also rings true. If and when the Republicans ever get control of our government, and the White House, again, it may be all over for us and any positive, constructive role in the world.
