Dan Patrick blasts 'trolls' for pointing out his racist Fox News appearance

Dan Patrick.

Jay Janner, MBR / Associated Press
It's been a while since we made a visit to the circus, so let's talk about Dan Patrick, who got himself into a bit of a mess Thursday night. It's a mess he's spent the better part of Friday trying to clean up, but instead is just making worse.

It began, as messes do, with an appearance on Fox News.

The radio host turned lieutenant governor was on Laura Ingraham's show on August 19 when he was asked a question about Texas' increased COVID-19 numbers. If you're just joining us, things in the Lone Star State are pretty grim. Hospitalizations are surging and the state continues to hit terrible milestone after terrible milestone. Meanwhile, the Texas Trio — Patrick; his boss, Gov. Greg Abbott; and Attorney General Ken "Wasn't Me" Paxton — refuse to do anything to help mitigate the crisis, even as Abbott himself remains quarantined in the Governor's Mansion fighting his own COVID-19 battle.

Surprising absolutely no one, Patrick took his moment on Fox News not to reflect, but to make false claims based on a racist theory.

"The biggest group in most states are African Americans who have not been vaccinated and last time I checked, over 90 percent of them vote for Democrats in their major cities and counties," Patrick chirped on the broadcast. "So it's up to the Democrats to get, just as it's up to Republicans, to try to get ... people vaccinated."

Ingraham then cut him off by mumbling nonsensically about TikTok videos. (Oh, how I wish this was a joke, but alas it is not.)

If Dan Patrick ever manages to become TX Governor, he'll make us all wish for the Good Old Days of Greg Abbott's reign.

Back when Patrick was an AM hate radio jockey in Houston, I once heard him devolve into speaking in tongues, on air. (I think the subject may have been Mel Gibson's Jesus torture flick, for which Patrick was absolutely horny.)

Dan Patrick is a major league racist asshole

According to data analyzed by KFF, Black people made up over 50% of positive Covid cases in only two of the 35 analyzed places as of August 16: the District of Columbia and Mississippi. Specifically, in Patrick's state of Texas, Black people represent 15% of cases, Hispanics 52% and White people 32%.

In his response to CNN, Patrick's office pointed to a Facebook post from the Lieutenant Governor which incorrectly claimed "Federal and State data clearly indicate that Black vaccination rates are significantly lower than White or Hispanic rates."

On this point, Patrick is wrong as well, since data suggests the difference across racial groups is not that clear. According to analysis of self-reported data from KFF, 65% of Black adults said they had received at least one dose of the vaccine compared to 70% of White adults and 61% of Hispanic adults. A different KFF analysis says that in 40 states, 50% of White people are vaccinated and 40% of Black people are vaccinated.

The KFF analysis notes that "Black and Hispanic people remain less likely than their White counterparts to have received a vaccine." However, vaccination rates among Black people continue to increase while the rate among White people is on the decline.
The number of new daily Covid cases continues to rise in the state of Texas, up 24% over the past two weeks. The number of patients hospitalized with the virus continues to climb as well. "Hospital capacity concerns worsening. Fatalities are increasing faster," the state's Department of State Health Services said Wednesday.
