In a Post-Truth World what do we hold as self-evident?
By Tom Burke / Herald columnist
I saw a piece in the paper blandly reporting that, In todays post-truth world
then a bunch of words I really dont remember, as I got stuck on the phrase, Post? Truth? World?
What the hell is the Post-Truth World?
Well, apparently, the Post-Truth World is a 5-year old parallel universe; a make-believe cloud-cuckoo land created by Republicans and MAGAs where nothing is true except what they want to believe is true. Its their imaginary world of alternative facts.
And it has a scientific name agnotology or the study of culturally induced ignorance or doubt where alternative facts replace actual facts; feelings have more weight than evidence; and where alternative facts compete on an equal footing with peer-reviewed research and formerly-authoritative sources.
Its a world where every reputable doctor, scientist, public health official, and maybe even a talking horse (Mr. Ed, from the 1960s TV show) tells us ivermectin does nothing, absolutely nothing, to cure covid-19 (and may, in fact, be dangerous to humans if the veterinary formulation is ingested), but people, such as right-wing radio talker Joe Rogan, admitted taking it anyway when he caught covid, after refusing to mask up or get the shot.

(32,626 posts)one has a great time, one has an awful time. Two different truths. Get some lights, camera, action, involved and choose whatever side you want to promote. And there is the news. Come to find out the one that didn't have a good time was raped, beaten, and murdered. But that's another truth.

(3,752 posts)I know I am existent consciousness. I have never know this consciousness to be absent.
Never in my life have I had need for independent (or repeated) verification of this reality.
Knowledge of 'self-evident existence' is never negated. Awake I am consciousness aware of the world.
In dream I am consciousness aware of another world. In deep sleep consciousness remains undisturbed by 'otherness'.
I am consciousness and know many other things as objects of consciousness.
However, I can never know my existent-consciousness as an object of my own consciousness.
Problems arise when consciousness is confused with ego and desire and belief, or any other changeable identity labels.
