Republicans Kicking Democrats Out Of Polling Locations: Chesapeake, Virginia

The old guard Republicans are not taking well to increasing Democratic upsurge in Chesapeake, VA and have been going out of their way to make things difficult for Corrie Cring, candidate for Treasurer, and her team.

Corrie Cring and her campaign manager (John Cring), above, have been handing out paper Democratic Voter Guides to early voters at the front of the Chesapeake Public Library located at 298 Cedar Rd. since early voting started in mid-Sept. David Washington, Chairman of the Chesapeake Democratic Committee, has also been texting the voter guides (see below) to likely Democratic voters.

As you can see, they do not reference an actual code, only insinuating that it exists somewhere in Code of Virginia Title 24.2 Elections. The law they are referencing § 24.2-625.2. Wireless communications at polling places is referring to the actual voting machines — NOT the voters mobile device.

= There shall be no wireless communications on election day, while the polls are open, between or among voting machines within the polling place or between any voting machine within the polling place and any equipment outside the polling place. For purposes of this section, the term wireless communication shall mean the ability to transfer information via electromagnetic waves without the use of electrical conductors. =

In § 24.2-604. Polling places; prohibited activities; prohibited area; penalties you can see the poll workers are required to not only mark where the voting entrance is but that they are also required to post this law at the voting entrance, below.



Corrie Cring and her team usually position themselves 10’ away from the entrance to the library. This would put them at a total of 130’ from the voting entrance when only 40’ is required. This was until a poll worker by the name of “Amanda,” pictured below in blue denim, who claimed to be the Polling Director, demanded Cring and her team move 40’ away from the entrance to the Library itself and would have placed them at a staggering 160’ from the voting entrance.

Amanda threatened to call the police to have Cring’s team removed if they didn’t follow her orders.

Corrie Cring, who is a strong advocate for voting rights, refused to move from the approved location. Shortly after “Amanda” left, Greg, who the Cring’s had been in contact with, said that he was in fact the Polling Director for the location and that he had no idea who “Amanda” was. Police officers never arrived on scene.

Corrie Cring, who is running for Treasurer in Chesapeake, VA, stated that she will not stop fighting for voter rights, and to get herself and other Dems elected. Any donation to Corrie Cring’s campaign would not only be an effort to get Cring elected but would support her efforts in reducing voter suppression.

- I love this — it shows the kind of small-scale evil, just a tiny bit of bullying and impersonating authority, misrepresenting the law, that was Trump’s modus operandi. It goes all the way up, and all the way down. Also shows how important is to know the rules, work in a team, and communicate early and often.

- these kinds of tactics have been around for ages, as noted elsewhere. And they appear everywhere, including in primary races in solid-blue jurisdictions. They should be resisted wherever they occur.

- One man showed up at my polling location bragging he was an election rover and entitled to watch people vote. He was asked for his credentials; he waved around a rifle (loaded, I later found out) “Here they are!”. We called the police, who did show up. He was taken off to jail, but not before he was told he would have to take classes and be vetted by the state before he could become a rover, then have his picture taken for a badge, and it would take about two months. He seemed kind of stunned...

1. This is an urgent situation. We need to take such happenings very seriously.

The phrase "Join or die" comes to mind.

The Trump republicans will stop at nothing to corrupt our electoral systems.

3. Thanks for the warnings of the antics and crazy nonsense that these thugs will try to stifle the

democratic votes ... my concern does go even deeper, will these thugs alter actual votes, will they cause violence? I know that there are (in some localities) laws that prevent votes from being altered, highly restrict where a vote can be cast, where a vote can be cast/dropped off, etc., and the penalties for violating such can be rather strict. Perhaps it's time to examine these laws as written and use them to our advantage against these republican voter posses.

4. Is there a law against impersonating an election official,

especially with the obvious goal of interfering with an election?

If so, "Amanda" should be identified and charged.

If not, Virginia needs to pass such a law ASAP?

5. Must be, this is serious and going on for decades..

Impersonating a police officer is even graver.. I heard that years back in the 60s (CA, AZ maybe) frauds would obtain pseudo uniforms ('rent a cop') and stand outside polling places to intimidate Hispanics.

6. Electioneering

I work as an Election Judge in Denver, CO. We have laws here that NO electioneering is to take place within 100' of a polling location. This is done to protect voters from intimidation--regardless of party. And, yes, we DO have the authority to tell people to remove themselves to the distance requirement.

We measure from the entrance of the BUILDING (not the room that is being used within the building) 100' and post signs in a radius around the entrance of the building that electioneering is prohibited.

I consider this dailykos article to be filled with inaccuracies and just an attempt to provoke outrage.

8. I work as election judge in Illinois

And we do the same, but the perimeter is smaller.

Only time it has affected me is when I had to get our county clerk down to explain to the angry, mouth-breathing trumpanzee right across the street from the polling place why I was in his yard taking down his trump signs in 2016.

10. Same thing here in Minnesota, where I work as an election judge.

We've had people set up a table and try to hand out pamphlets at the entrance to a building, believing that they were within the law because they were more than the required distance from the room where the polling was taking place. But no dice. They needed to be the required distance from the entrance to the property, which, in this case, meant the entrance to the schoolyard, and not the school building.

13. Different localities/States have different rules.

Elections are run by the States. There is NO Uniform Code in the USA.

I consider the article to be factual and an attempt to inform and motivate people to be active and protect their right to vote.

9. Texas Election Code prohibits cell phones inside the voting location.

We are provided laminated signs which we display prominently. The only active cell phones permitted are the Presiding and Alternate Judges because we have to be able to contact the Elections Office if we have issues.
There is also a firearms prohibition.

If voters tell us they want to look at the choices or read about the candidates, we ask them to leave the voting area to do so. We will gladly give them a sample ballot if requested, or tell them how to find it on their device. We will not even let them take photos of themselves inside. They can do it outside and if we are not busy, one of us will often take the picture

No photographing of any ballots, etc.

Our machines are not wireless; they are daisy chained, and the machine which generates the voting machine access code for the correct ballot is the first machine.

The only thing we use wireless for is voter check in. Cute little E Vote Pads

Poll watchers have to be trained at the Elections Office, then registered. They will have appointment paperwork which we must see before we will give them the badges etc.

I do not know what the new Election Code will require regarding Poll watchers. We really won't know until the primary

Where are the democrat volunteers and poll workers to make sure this is honest? If our party wants to defeat this attempt to obstruct or democracy, the we need our party IN EVERY STATE to make sure this does not happen.
