Police Are Howling About Vaccine Mandates ... As They Die of COVID-19 By The Hundreds
- Daily Kos, Oct. 13, 2021. -Ed.
Police across the country are having temper tantrums when faced with COVID-19 vaccine mandatesand because police in the United States so often get whatever they demand, their resistance is being taken very seriously. Workplace vaccine requirements have moved the vast majority of workers where theyve gone into effect, from health care systems to meatpacking plants to airlines. The police are insisting they have to be different. Police are also dying of COVID-19 in large numbers.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 228 officers have been killed by COVID-19 in 2021, and 47 have been killed by gunfire. In 2020, the numbers were 245 and 45. Consider that. Around 50 officers a year have been killed by gunfire over the past few years. The threat that an officer might be killed by an armed suspect is used to justify police violence against civiliansincluding unarmed onesall the time. But, apparently, a virus that kills more than 4 times that number is not, to many police, an adequate reason to get a free, safe shot.
-- If this was cops getting shot on the streets of America today at this number, there would be outrage, Chuck Wexler, exec. director of the Police Executive Research Forum, told The New York Times. This is an issue that begs for leadership & putting politics aside. Thats exactly the opposite of whats happening right now. --
Instead, the Los Angeles County sheriff won't enforce a county vaccine mandate. San Jose, Ca., caved to police whining and allowed unvaccinated officers to stay on through the end of the year. Dozens of Mass. state troopers reportedly threatened to resign rather than be vaccinated, & though only one had done so at the time the threat went public, the president of the State Police Association of Mass. is still claiming that dozens of resignations are coming. (There are around 1,500 uniformed state police in Mass., so dozens might still be less than 2%.)
Orange County, Fla., Sheriff John Mina attributed some vaccine resistance to police encountering violent criminals all the time carrying guns, & I think they think that may be more of a threat. Except that far more officers have died of COVID-19 during the pandemic than at the hands of violent criminals carrying guns, so at a minimum, their risk assessment is poor. Local govt. leaders tell the Times that officers have leverage because there are a lot of job openings & not a lot of applicants. But the same is true in other industries that have stuck it out & found that a lot of the screaming about resigning rather than being vaccinated evaporate in the face of a credible threat of job loss.
The major issue here looks like police are accustomed to getting their way whenever they make a stink, & think their feelings should trump public health. They should have learned differently before now, but its not too late for the lesson to come...

- "I received a fundraising phone call this morning from some LEO, wanting me to donate to something dedicated to officers wounded or killed in the line of duty. I pointed out that more officers had been killed by covid than by guns over the last 2 years (as per the NYT article), & that as long as their unions were resisting vaccinations I didnt see any point in contributing.
He couldnt get off the phone fast enough. Went into high-speed mode for his mandatory exit script "-

What sort of vigilante, tough guy, anti-vaxxer police force do you run over there in the USA anyway?
Being a violent thug inconsiderate of public safety on several levels gets you locked up in most countries, not hired as a policeman.
But it fits in well with America being a third world country where violence is the norm.

(19,204 posts)to fork over untold amounts of money for body armor for Police? Occupational hazard, right? The chances of getting shot and killed by some perp are 75% less then dying of COVID.
I suggest Police officers not willing to be vaccinated surrender their body armor to be reallocated to Police officers who take their lives more seriously. These officers obviously don't take their mortality seriously, so strip them of all protective devices.
It's just sound business practice, after all.
They want to play stupid games? Alright, let's up the ante.
