Has Joe Manchin found an excuse to destroy President Biden's agenda?

Things seemed to be going so well for Democrats. Progressives and centrists in the House resolved (mostly) their differences over President Biden’s Build Back Better bill, and the separate infrastructure bill passed, to everyone’s delight. It looked like Biden could be heading for a pair of legislative victories that would deliver on a substantial portion of his agenda, and vital steps on pressing problems — affordable child care, health insurance, climate change, even prescription drug prices — would finally be taken.

But now, with new inflation data, the BBB is at risk of destruction. It may be possible that one eternally grumpy Democratic senator — Joe Manchin III of West Virginia — will use inflation as an excuse to kill the most important legislation of Biden’s term.

And it would be an excuse, not a justifiable response to what’s actually happening in the economy and the effect the legislation will have.

Let’s be clear: Inflation is a real problem, though if you looked at the sheer volume of headlines about it over the last week, you’d think it was running at 6000 percent rather than 6 percent. It’s a challenge, not a cataclysm; we’re not pushing wheelbarrows full of cash to the grocery store to buy a loaf of bread.

That’s not something the administration can say, because it would make them sound insensitive to people’s real worries and struggles. But right now the blanket media coverage of the issue makes everyone believe things are even worse than they are, as when CNN’s Wolf Blitzer describes genuinely high gas prices by visiting a Washington gas station whose prices are nearly a dollar higher than other stations just blocks away.

Manchin does not want to Build Back Better. Manchin does not even want to Make America Great Again. What Manchin wants is to be the focus of media attention.

He has much in common with fellow small-state Senator Lindsey Graham, another attention-seeking chancre on our body politic.

.... two purposes. 1. And most important it will fatten his wallet. And 2. it will give him "cred" to pull the stunt again and again.

Enough already. After he has bled all the blood out of the original proposals very little great stuff is left.

IMHO he is a calculating POS.

If he were seeking nationwide office it would be different but I doubt any level of public Dem pressure will move him. Now if you find a dozen ways of cutting federal funding or otherwise affect WV interests without cutting the throats of the other 49 states that could work but I would think Nancy and Chuck would be there already if that Lyndon Johnson style of arm twisting were possible.

The Luxe Olde Farm Golf Resort was built with coal money

You can't golf, eat, stay, or even visit there w/out a member's invite and the menu doesn't even have
prices on it.

Joe is willing to sell out his constituents in W.V. and curse the planet with global warming so he can
eat beef tenderloins, lobster bisque, and baby redskin potatoes as he is drinking $300.00 red wine.

Manchin knows that the BBB plan cannot pass, unless the filibuster is tossed...and he won't do that! He will continue to whittle down the amount until it's nothing more then a drop in the bucket!!!

Manchin can't afford for the people of West Virginia to get their heads above water...and he can't stay away from the donations coming from the fossil fuel industry!

While he sits in his yacht in D.C. or drives his Maserati...he's happy and the needs of the people of West Virginia be damned!!!

The BBB plan is currently on life support, but Manchin and Sinema want it to die...and it probably will!!!

Manchin is getting fund raisers held for him by Repug donors. He absolutely loves attention and the cameras.

BBB won't pass because Manchin will just keep whittling away until progressive have no choice but to walk away. Then he blames them.

He's being paid by Republican funders. He's enacting McConnell's agenda. His fortunes are otherwise tied to coal.

He is evil, and his actions will indirectly result in more harm that most people realize.

Please, let's stop using kid-glove names with him.

ManChin is the poster boy for the new wave of legislators that put “self serving” above public service IMO.
