If we've learned nothing else from 2021, it's that we cannot allow democracy to die Opinion

If you ask me what was the most important world event of 2021, besides the pandemic, it was the bloody attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. It may go down in history as the beginning of the end of America’s democracy.

Fox News and other revisionist historians are trying to downplay the deadly mob violence as an innocent outburst of frustration by former President Trump’s diehard followers, who refused to believe that he had lost the election.

But it was much more than that. It was the first time in recent memory that an outgoing U.S. president has tried to overturn an election result. And it may be a preview of what Trump will try to do if he runs again — and wins — in 2024.

Trump went out of his way to subvert the elections. He called Georgia’s secretary of state, a Republican, to demand that he “find” 11,780 votes needed to overturn the results in that state, according to a recording of the conversation.

Then Trump called on followers across the country to come to Washington D.C. on Jan. 6 to demand Congress to reject the election results, and he publicly demanded that Vice President Pence not certify them. The crowds that forced their way into the Capitol on Jan. 6 chanted “Fight for Trump!” and “Hang Mike Pence!.”

It was the kind of coup attempt we see in Third World countries, but that was almost unimaginable in the world’s wealthiest democracy. Yet, it happened before our eyes. It’s on videotape. And it’s threatening to happen again.
