This is 2012 and I don't believe in cries of "war on women." So I didn't pay too much attention in this hotheaded election season when the war cries began.
But Thursday, the state Legislature didn't just vote down a couple of pro-choice legislators: They literally shut them up.
Maybe there's an unwritten rule that Michigan legislators can't utter the word "vagina." Only last week, in a column for Dome magazine, 14-year former legislator Maxine Berman (no relation to me) revealed that she had never heard the word on the House floor.
Then State Rep. Lisa Brown, D-West Bloomfield, went ahead and shattered precedent. In the brief debate allowed before a vote on a restrictive anti-abortion bill, Brown spoke out on the subject of religious freedom and abortion, before her clincher: "Finally, Mr. Speaker, I'm flattered that you're all so interested in my vagina, but 'no' means 'no.'"
That was Wednesday. Thursday morning, the Republican leadership invoked the secret vagina rule. Or the June 14 "don't talk back" rule. Or something.
