Healthcare victory draws a clear line in US politics

a view from Australia that has had socialised healthcare for 30 years and where both side of politics, liberal and conservative compete at elections as to who will spend the most on hospitals etc.

This victory is bigger than we think .In a few years no-one left or right, will want to go back to how it was.

US President Barack Obama Photo: The health care act has been Obama's big idea, his singular big achievement.

It's a convoluted and complicated ruling, as these things often are, but the US Supreme Court's decision to back the constitutionality of president Obama's healthcare act will be seen as one of the courts truly historic decisions.

As soon as the announcement was made that the justices had deemed by a five-four majority to back Obamacare - as its derisively known here in some circles - it was being compared to other hugely significant high court decisions - all the way back to the Dred Scott ruling in the civil war era that declared slaves weren't citizens of the united states, through the pro-abortion Roe v Wade decision and the more contemporary and extremely contentious citizens united ruling in 2010 that effectively blew the lid off limits on campaign spending.
