Harrop: Santos' lies weren't just lies; they were dumb lies

In the movie classic, “All About Eve,” George Sanders as the snob theater critic rakes scheming young actress Anne Baxter over the lies she told about her hard-knocks background.

The one where she claims being at a Shubert Theater in San Francisco was a lie too far. That theater never existed, Sanders roars: “That was a stupid lie. Easy to expose. It was unworthy of you.”

George Santos, who flipped a Democratic seat on Long Island, is an even-less talented liar. He got away with it thanks to trusting voters, the sleeping media and a comatose Democratic opposition. He was further helped by Republican insiders who knew it all and considered his resume “a running joke,” but, according to The New York Post, kept quiet about it.

Thus, Santos’ success was not so much a reflection of his mastery of deceit as of a credulous electorate made even easier marks by lazy political and media professionals. His response when found out was a whined “I’m sorry.”

2. I want to call BS

on the "comatose Democratic opposition" charge.

My understanding is that Democrats tried desperately to get this story some traction, but "the liberal media" were too busy reporting on the coming red tsunami that was going to sweep all before it to bother with such a trivial story as another con artist seeking political office.

"Sleeping media?" More like media determined to frame the narrative to exclude voices they didn't want to hear.
