DHS Warns: Rt Wing Firearms Attacks, Land Mines on Migration Routes, Gassing Immigrants in Trailers

DHS warns of rt-wing firearms attacks, land mines laid on migration routes & gassing of migrants, Daily Kos, 1.2.23. Ed.

Had Title 42 been lifted, there might have been an explosion of violence against immigrants by white nationalist groups, according to the Dept. of Homeland Security. Expecting Title 42 to be lifted, DHS issued a warning that should that happen, there might be an uptick anti-immigrant violence. According to CBS News (https://www.aol.com/homeland-security-warns-potential-domestic-000236669.html), “Intelligence officials ‘have observed calls for attacks targeting primarily migrants & critical infrastructure,’ according to a bulletin issued on Dec. 23 by the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis, which cites social media discussion of ‘firearms attacks, the placement of land mines along migration routes, and luring migrants into trailers to poison them with gas.’"

The DHS memo reads: “We have not previously observed calls for substation attacks in response to immigration-related concerns, and these recent discussions may stem from widespread media coverage of recent attacks against other substations across the US, particularly in Moore County, N. Carolina.” Earlier this year, a public advisory issued by DHS warned that, "Potential changes in border security enforcement policy, an increase in noncitizens attempting to enter the U.S., or other immigration-related developments may heighten these calls for violence."

Granting a petition from GOP-led states, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court allowed U.S. border officials to continue expelling migrants under the pandemic-related measure, known as Title 42. CBS News reported (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/supreme-court-keeps-title-42-border-expulsions-indefinitely-grants-gop-led-petition/?ftag=YHF4eb9d17) that, “The high court decided to hear a request from 19 GOP-led states who were seeking to delay the end of Title 42, which was originally set to expire on Dec. 21 because of a lower court order that found the policy to be unlawful. The SC will now hear arguments on whether it should allow the Republican-controlled states to defend Title 42's legality during its Feb. 2023 session.”

Violence against immigrants is nothing new. A CNN story noted: “Grievances over immigration policy & animosity toward immigrants have previously fueled extremist acts, incl. the 2019 Walmart shooting in El Paso, TX, that killed 23 people & left another 23 wounded. Authorities said at the time the accused shooter drove to the W. Texas border city with the sole intent of killing immigrants & Mexicans” (https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/28/politics/title-42-violent-extremist-attacks/index.html?ftag=YHF4eb9d17). A report from The Center for Public Integrity: (https://publicintegrity.org/politics/elections/anti-immigrant-rhetoric-spiked-in-this-election-heres-why-its-dangerous/), “Anti-immigrant rhetoric has featured prominently in GOP candidates’ campaign ads & speeches ahead of Nov. 8 midterm elections. But watchdogs say this election cycle is different because of how much the GOP has embraced & promoted a more sinister mix of fringed conspiracy theories rooted in xenophobia & white supremacy... -- Full Article + 19 Comments, https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/1/2/2144785/-DHS-warns-of-rt-wing-firearms-attacks-land-mines-laid-on-migration-routes-gassing-of-migrants

- Maybe the State and Federal governments shouldn’t allow Freikorps style private armies to operate? I dunno. Just spitballing here.
- Private paramilitary activity is already illegal. What they need to do is enforce the laws we already have on the books. You’d almost think a bunch of rednecks doing military training at their own compound and showing up at protests armed to the teeth is perfectly legal — when it’s not. Militias by definition are under the control of state governments. A private army is nothing more than a gang of criminals. Considering the threat some of them pose, why the hell aren’t we breaking them up?
- The mention of gassing people in trucks just gave me chills with its echo of early Nazi tactics.
- Yes, me too. Amazingly, the people who come up with ideas like this will turn around and argue that the actual Nazis are their opponents, because their grasp of history (and reality) is that weak.
- Gee, maybe they should be arresting these people instead of warning us about them? Just a thought. Specific plans, conspiracy to commit murder — sounds actionable to me.

- Meanwhile, people on my NextDoor community post are complaining because fast food restaurants can’t get their orders right (no doubt because of overworked, skeleton staff) and some new restaurants can’t open because they can’t get enough employees. The hate sure blinds people to the facts about how our economy survives and is reinforced by our immigrants, and always has. We are only going to see this impact expanded as southern governors treat immigrants as pawns and a bad thing for our society.
They forget the struggles of their Irish, Italian and other immigrant ancestors from the past. Guess for many, once “on top” you don’t ever look back.
- No surprise White Christian Fundamental and Nationalist leaders would approve of this.
- While I do not doubt the capacity for violence among the RWNJ’s, the fact that they are talking about placing land mines along routes immigrants take does not realistically translate into actual access to land mines. I mean it would take placements of dozens, if not hundreds, of mines to effectively impede the travels of immigrants, and such a deployment would likely increase the risk of killing or injuring others, including CBP officers.
Has there been any recent seizures of land mines from private citizens?
- Afghanistan was littered with “improvised explosive devices” (IEDs). Can’t be too hard to build. If Title 42 were lifted, there would be a legal path for immigrants to follow and less traffic through alternate migration routes. - Con't...
