he future Pope John Paul II, while still archbishop of Kraków, knew of sexual abuse by priests subordinate to him but allowed them to continue working in the church and may even have tried to prevent the authorities from learning of their crimes, a new report by Polish broadcaster TVN claims.
The revelations come amid debate in Poland over the legacy of John Paul II a national hero not only for his spiritual leadership but also for the role he played in inspiring opposition to the communist regime with regard to historical abuse cases in the Catholic church.
The former popes defenders, led by the Polish episcopate, have often argued that John Paul II was unaware of the scale of abuse being covered up in the church and that the first signs began to reach him when he was already severely ill.
TVN which has previously broadcast claims that John Paul IIs close associate and private secretary Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, ignored cases of sexual abuse in the Catholic church yesterday aired a new report focused on how the former pope himself dealt with three cases of priests responsible for abuse.
Two of those cases of Eugeniusz Surgent and Józef Loranc have already been reported on by other journalists in recent months. But TVNs report featured new evidence, including accounts directly from victims and witnesses.
The third case was that of Bolesław Saduś, who was responsible for overseeing religion classes for children in the archdiocese of Kraków and was a close acquaintance of the future pope, then known by his birth name of Karol Wojtyła and who served as archbishop of Kraków from 1964 to 1978.

(15,062 posts)1. When I was a kid, our Northern CA parish had a priest from Poland, who people said knew the pope
or had worked directly for him as a secretary or some such, and while I thankfully never had any bad interactions with him, several decades later I learned he had molested some of the altar boys who were a few years different in age from myself. I now presume that he was sent half way around the world as part of the widespread shuffling around of serial abusers, and that the pope knew -- if indeed he was close to the pope and that backstory wasn't just rumor/puffery.

The former popes defenders...argued...(JPII) was unaware of the scale of abuse being covered up in the church...
And they consider that a defense? He knew - just didn't know the scale of the problem (until later) - so, golly, what could he do?
Damn.

The state of Illinois evidently has evidence of over 2000 abuse cases by the church spanning decades....guess no one knew about that too.
