Trump doesn't sound like somebody trying to get elected

Rick Newman· Senior Columnist

Donald Trump promises more of the same if he wins the 2024 presidential election — more of the protectionism that defined his first presidential term, more dismantling of government, more slashing and burning of the system that many Trump supporters think is rigged against them.

But he may be misreading what voters want. Trump found surprise success in 2016 with his populist, America-first agenda, but voters didn’t love all of it. Plus, the electorate has changed since Trump first won the White House.

Trump, for instance, said recently that he still wants to repeal and replace Obamacare, the 2010 health reform law President Obama signed that extended health insurance to 40 million Americans. “Obamacare sucks!!!” Trump wrote recently on his social media site, Truth Social, vowing to replace it with something better.

In 2016, most Americans agreed with Trump that Obamacare, aka the Affordable Care Act (ACA), was a bummer. But not anymore. Public approval of the ACA has grown from around 40% in 2016 to nearly 60% in 2023, according to polling by KFF.

1. Lots of good fodder for Dem ad writers and stump talking points

I did read somewhere though a point that BIden needs to run on what HE wants to do and not just be the anti-Trump. I think that is good point. I keep wishing Biden/Dems would come up with some very big program ideas NOW on just a few focused things the vast number of Americans agree on as immediate issues-- national budget/debt/inflation, immigration and health care affordability/accessibility. I know climate change, gun violence and other issues are out there as well especially for us Dems but need to cast as wide a net as possible to make sure our Dem candidates can attract not only we who are True Blue but the independents and maybe even some moderate Republicans who would like to see at least a few things really addressed not band aids on top of band aids.

Joe Biden. He doesn't treat them with exception as they seem to think they deserve. They play a role in our society and are falling down on the job on this.

At least MSNBC seems to, for the evening/night crew, be on top of this issue to some degree. I am glad to see all that they are producing this past week about the coup, next year's election and hosting Liz Cheney and having adult, reasonable dialogue with her.

5. Would be interesting to know what percentage of political media time/words is focused on Biden/Dems vs. Trump/GOP

I would bet it is at least 2 to 1 for Trump. Now granted the court cases sort of cloud what is truly political or not, but still I think it's way out of balance.

I honestly can't recall who at the moment, presented numbers relative to what you mention and I think it was actually 3:1 or something like that.

7. I believe President Biden viewed himself more as a bridge than the destination.

Former Vice President Joe Biden called himself a “bridge” to future Democratic leaders Monday night as he campaigned with Sen. Kamala Harris of California, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

“Look, I view myself as a bridge, not as anything else,” Biden said. “There’s an entire generation of leaders you saw stand behind me. They are the future of this country.”

The nod to three people expected to be considered for the vice presidential nomination was the most direct the 77-year-old former vice president has been about how he views his role within the party.

He has long pledged to return the nation to pre-President Donald Trump normalcy. But he and his aides have declined to address whether, if elected, he would run for a second term in 2024. He has said only that he would not run again if he were in poor health.

I believe this may be part of the reason that his poll numbers have been low despite a very good first term from a policy perspective.

He has pronounced himself more as a transitional figure, and combined with his age, so long as he stays healthy and vibrant, I believe his poll numbers will rise the closer we get to November of 24.

However if the only reason he is running is to keep *rump from coming back to power, I don't believe that will be enough.

In large part because I don't believe *rump will even be the Republican nominee.
