The Southern "Problem" Part 1.

https://blackbirdsatdusk.wordpress.com/2024/01/25/the-southern-problem/

Excerpt:

Expatriates from the American Deep South, when asked, may occasionally share fond memories of family, culture, food, music and the myriad ways in which the South and Southerners are not deplorable. There is much to Southern culture that can be appreciated and there are experiences unique to the American South which provide perspective on socially important issues that might otherwise be ignored by the greater American polity.

Despite the appeal of Southern nostalgia the unfortunate truth remains that disingenuous leaders and disaffected followers of those same leaders are ramping up for a sequel to the American Civil War. Left unchecked, there is a distinct possibility that recent events along the Texas state border may precipitate a series of events which will lead to the use of American military power on American soil for the first time in more than a century. Individuals not attuned to the rhetoric of southern bigots may fail to understand the urgency of this humanitarian crisis.

But all of my happy memories depend in one way or another on the white, middle-class privilege I enjoyed.

I'm so glad I no longer live in Texas.

I'm never going back.
