By confessing in the absolutory presence of St. Oprah, Lance Armstrong is behaving as predictably as a wind-up robot.

He is obediently reading from the same dog-eared script that Americans never seem to get tired of: Triumph, Scandal and Redemption in three easy-to-follow acts.

I’m not a particular fan, but I can’t blame the guy for trying the formula that has worked for so many others before him.

This is the Apology Tour portion of the drama, the part where the fallen hero bravely comes clean: to the head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, to the staff of the Livestrong Foundation, to Winfrey, to us. ...
