aristocles
(594 posts)Yes, he was a slave owner, but he wrote:
"And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever: that considering numbers, nature and natural means only, a revolution of the wheel of fortune, an exchange of situation, is among possible events: that it may become probable by supernatural interference! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in such a contest."
He saw that civil war would come.

(4,299 posts)I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. No man is safe in his opinions, his person, his faculties, or his possessions. If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.
He was also pro RKBA, but considering the times...

(22,000 posts)Maybe on my 50th birthday. That will give me 7 more years to live.
I went caving when I was younger. Actually most of them were old mines up in a mountain near the city we lived in. Had a few close calls too. I was so much skinnier then. I'm not sure I could drag my ass though one now if I wanted to.
Only went repelling once in high school and it scared the hell out of me.
Did the paragliding in Boracay over water. It was so beautiful being up there in the sky.
