(16,350 posts)He grew up in Mississippi during the Depression, in a family of black sharecroppers. When I was a young girl, he told me a story of when he was a young man and had eaten at a diner somewhere in the South. It wasn't until he had finished that he realized he had forgotten his wallet. The white waitress told him that's okay just pay us later. He went back that day and paid his bill. It was because of that waitress, he told me, that I had to know there are good white people in the world.

(32,623 posts)I love hearing how simple acts of kindness can spiral out, doing so much more good than could be imagined.
In the mid eighties I was a single mom with a toddler. On the freeway one night- it was late, we'd been to visit my folks- we had a blow-out. Pre-cell phone I just sort of sat there trying to figure if I would be safe trying to change the tire myself. An old truck stopped and a very large black man scolded me to get in the car with the baby and he changed the tire for me. When I thanked him, he said he did it because that's what he hoped someone would do for his daughter. I loved having that memory just because it is a good memory but I also loved being able to share with my children and especially with others who seemed to really need it.
What a great way to start the day! Thanks again.

(333 posts)the black-on-black violence. Otherwise, this brother is full of shit and needs to lay off the dope. He's basically acting like racism no longer exists, and that the only thing holding us back is ourselves. Never mind the fact that there is institutionalized racism, a record amount of obstruction towards Obama by the wingnuts compared to past presidents, and people constantly on YouTube and elsewhere still calling folks the "N" word.

(6,891 posts)of institutional racism and the fact it has traditionally been directed against non-whites. I think what he is saying is that the function of that racism is to divide and conquer working class people using race as a wedge. I doubt if the people who rule this plutocracy care any more for poor or middle class working white people than they do anyone else. You are correct. The first step in changing the status quo is to address violence, not just racial violence, but all violence and bigotry directed against ourselves by ourselves as members of the same class or of different races. Only unity has any possibility of saving us from the ruling class, regardless of the color of its members.
