Arr! Michigan to formally recognize ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day’

The Michigan Senate on Tuesday adopted a resolution to officially recognize September 19, 2013, as International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

“Thank you, matey,” state Sen. Roger Kahn (R-Saginaw) said on the Senate floor. “Today we have passed speak like a pirate day.”

The resolution noted that International Talk Like a Pirate Day “began humbly in 1995 between two pirate enthusiasts named John Baur and Mark Summers as way to express their individual passion for nautical plundering.”


The two men celebrated International Talk Like a Pirate Day on their own for seven years before contacting comedian and author Dave Barry in hopes of popularizing the day. Their hopes turned into reality after Barry wrote a column about the day. The swashbuckling holiday was an instant sensation.

“Whereas, As ITLPD has blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon, it is appropriate for the state of Michigan to formally acknowledge this holiday and grant it the recognition it truly deserves. As a Great Lakes state, one of Michigan’s main duties must be promoting worthy maritime initiatives. ITLPD would give Michiganders who feel a strong connection to our Great Lakes an opportunity to properly celebrate beloved maritime activities, past and present,” the resolution added.

According to Pastafarian "beliefs", pirates are "absolute divine beings" and the original Pastafarians.[7] Furthermore, Pastafarians believe that the concept of pirates as "thieves and outcasts" is misinformation spread by Christian theologians in the Middle Ages and by Hare Krishnas. Instead, Pastafarians believe that they were "peace-loving explorers and spreaders of good will" who distributed candy to small children, adding that modern pirates are in no way similar to "the fun-loving buccaneers from history". The inclusion of pirates in Pastafarianism was part of Henderson's original letter to the Kansas State Board of Education, in an effort to illustrate that correlation does not imply causation.[39] Henderson presented the argument that "global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of pirates since the 1800s."[7] A chart accompanying the letter (with numbers humorously disordered on the x-axis) shows that as the number of pirates decreased, global temperatures increased. This parodies the suggestion from some religious groups that the high numbers of disasters, famines, and wars in the world is due to the lack of respect and worship toward their deity. In 2008, Henderson interpreted the growing pirate activities at the Gulf of Aden as additional support, pointing out that Somalia has "the highest number of pirates and the lowest carbon emissions of any country".[40]
