guitar as a gift from his mother who, as I understand it, got it for him second hand at a pawn shop for sixty bucks. He was a teenager, around sixteen years old. He played in his room for five or six hours a day mastering the art, largely self taught. Springsteen grew up in middle class New Jersey and is from Dutch and Italian descent. (I read this somewhere.)
