Sean Hannity had on a panel of 20 or so guests last night, all black conservatives
to bash Obama, They seemed bitter that the first black President was not a Republican,
because their party could do a better job with the blacks. It was a brain washing segment
to say the least.

Geez who the hell is this fundiegelical freak Jackson? Thinking ownership by slave holders was worse than modern day welfare state? Does this fool even KNOW his damn history? Does he REALLY believe that just because of the nuclear family model the African-American family was better off? Del. Charniele Herring, the first guest who spoke, was right: slavery actually broke up families.
I think there's an entire industry of right wing misinformation peddled all over Townhall.com, Drudge, Breitbart, all sorts of blogs & websites & even newspapers pushing this rugged individualist, personal responsibility, damn-everything-else worldview. Take this quote from the African-American conservative economist Thomas Sowell: "The black family, which had survived centuries of slavery and discrimination, began rapidly disintegrating in the liberal welfare state that subsidized unwed pregnancy and changed welfare from an emergency rescue to a way of life." This is all basically part of a strategy to paint liberals as the real racists who f__ked up black Americans' lives. As if it was better for black Americans to be heavily in nuclear families yet suffer centuries deprived of human rights that white Americans enjoyed the same time. Meanwhile what about the white families that have been disintegrating since the Free Love years? Apparently this "breaking up the family" argument is played when convenient:
Sowell's argument about the black family/centuries of slavery when criticizing WELFARE,
and the "decline of the nuclear family" (non-racial) argument whenever gay rights are discussed.
VERY powerful segment - too bad Ed got dumped to the weekend "who cares" timeslot. I think Chris Hayes with his colorful panelists segments will be able to rip up E.W. Jackson and make good on racial issues as well.
And Mr. Jackson, here's some advice, dude. Keep that "only God can solve these problems" stuff in church. Better yet, go to Norfolk State or Hampton Universities nearby your house and talk to a history prof about slavery.

(15,882 posts)4. There's an old saying about the best jokes having a grain of truth. When EW speaks, I think of that.
EW being the joke...
A snippet of the report they talked about can be found here.
Among the findings in The Moynihan Report Revisited:
...
The statistics that so alarmed Moynihan have only grown worse, not only for blacks, but for whites and Hispanics as well. Today, the share of white children born outside marriage is about the same as the share was for black children in Moynihans day. Meanwhile, the percentage of black children born to unmarried mothers has tripled, remaining far higher than the percentage of white children born to unmarried mothers.[br]
In 1960, 20 percent of black children lived with their mothers but not their fathers; by 2010, 53 percent of all black children lived in such families. The share of white children living with their mothers but not their fathers climbed to 20 percent in 2010, up from 6 percent in 1960.[br]
There has been a marked retreat from marriage. In 1960, just over one-half of all black women were married and living with their husbands, compared with over two-thirds of white and Hispanic women. By 2010, only one-quarter of black women, two-fifths of Hispanic women, and one-half of white women lived with their spouses. [br]
That the decline of traditional families occurred across racial and ethnic groups indicates that factors driving the decline do not lie solely within the black community but in the larger social and economic context. Nevertheless, the consequences may be felt disproportionately among blacks as black children are far more likely to be born into and raised in father-absent families than are white children.

(2,608 posts)5. I'm really sick of this BS argument...
If the churches think that welfare is a problem, then they should offer something better. They could offer better paying jobs with free childcare. They could help people get into better housing. Until then they need to STFU.
