(7,217 posts)I saw this years ago, courtesy of an email forwarded from a friend who had his own "crazy uncle Larry" in a basement somewhere.
Pissed I went digging. "Crestwood" is Crestwood, Illinois. It's then mayor, who put up this hate-sign, is Chester Stranczek. He is, of course, a Rethuglican.
"Evidence at a trial this summer (2013) showed that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency determined in 1986 that (Crestwood's water) well was contaminated and ordered Crestwood to stop using it, but that Neubauer and Scaccia under orders from Stranczek helped hide the continued use of the well.
"It contained vinyl chloride, a cancer-causing chemical, which may be linked to the elevated levels of cancer among Crestwood residents, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
"Sentencing Neubauer and Scaccia, (Judge) Gottschall said the case was about perverting Democracy to help re-elect Stranczek. [Stranczek] didnt want to pay for upgrades to the water system so he could fool citizens into thinking he was a fiscal genius when in fact he was a charlatan, the judge said."
Oh, yeah; he's a Republican all right.

(135,425 posts)How do those dunces get up and get dressed in the morning?
I know that there are people who have trouble with the written word owing to the way their brains are wired, but DAMN--when you've got a crowd of ten, twenty, thirty or more, you'd think they'd have one person--one single, solitary person--who might go round reading the signs and saying something like, "Hey dude, it's s-o-c-i-a-l-i-s-t; let's paste a piece of paper over that part and fix it so you don't look like, er, a fucking moRAN!"
But thank you for that--it was horrible....and riveting!

(113,303 posts)and picketing the theaters. went to watch the fun (not the movie, which I had no interest in watching). one of them was carrying a sign demanding that the studio be boycotted. I went over and helpfully pointed out that she had spelled the name of the studio wrong. she got very huffy, and said, "well, that just isn't important". I replied, "well, actually it is. if you can't even spell what you are protesting, it makes you look like an idiot." there happened to be a reporter for one of the local rags within hearing, who was having a great deal of trouble not laughing out loud.
when I have the misfortune to encounter one of these "english-only" morans, I say that I think it only right that they demonstrate the same level of proficiency in their native language that I, as a non-native. have, which few seem to possess.

(135,425 posts)Could it have been that opus?
That was one of the first times I really noticed the annoying "fundy factor." Of course, I'd been in and out of USA so hadn't seen it previously, but that film kind of brought out my awareness of their 'poutrage' over things they thought were inappropriate.
Love your story--the damn reporters should have exercised a little "journalism" and included it in their reports--it's the best part of the whole drama, IMO!

don't know if the reporter ever included that little exchange, never bothered to read about it.

(135,425 posts)Jesus, a 33 year old Jewish adult male living in a society that prioritized the family unit, had an adult sexual relationship in the film!
I always thought the religious hierarchy invented a fiction that Jesus was celibate to discourage priests from marrying and making off with church assets to give to their heirs! Makes more sense to me than buying off on the concept of a single 33 year old wandering around talking to people, and nobody noodging him by saying "What the hell's tha' mattah wit' you, Jesus? When ya gonna get MAAAARIED?"
niyad
(113,303 posts)as a 33-year old jew and rabbi, jesus almost certainly would have been married. of course, I like to point out that the story of jesus is nearly identical to that of mitra/mithra/mithras (and that the story of his sacrifice/crucifixtion is pretty much the same as all the year-kings/vegetation kings)

(135 posts)"Moran!" Where did THAT word come from? I was taught to spell it "moron".
When, a couple years ago, I posted what thought was a correction, some responses hinted that I was some kind of an ignoramus (or "moran" or "moron" .
Oh well, if "moran" has somehow insinuated its way into common usage, then, ipso facto, it is (very colloquial) English. That's how language works and evolves.
But I sincerely want to know where that word came from. Can someone out there in DU-land educate me?
Until then, I guess that I must remain uneducated.

(135 posts)Thanks for the link. Explains a lot -- but not all.
As a paradigm example of the right-wing, "ignernt and proud of it!", attitude, "moran" is insightful.
But why have so many lefties adopted the word as if it were somehow legitimate?
Hopefully, "moran" will fade away and be forgotten.
I know that I will do nothing to encourage its adoption into the language.

(10,893 posts)mainly use that word "moran" as a way of mocking them and portraying them as imbeciles.

(2,065 posts)That has to be my favorite Teabagger poor English slogan of all time. Just to be fair to the Teabaggers, I believe that quite a few of their misspellings were simply typos or oversights that came from writing their billboards with undue haste. But much more disturbing is the content of their signs: such blatant racism and bigotry, with complete disregard for any kind of facts or reality check. They don't realize that the Koch brothers and the other dark money groups are simply exploiting and using their ignorance and prejudices for their own ends - it's like the Teabaggers are drones sent by the ultraconservative SuperPacs to do their dirty work.
